The background ad libs are great - perhaps give them the spotlight at time, stepping back the lead vocals to let the background take the leads. Maybe you could even begin the song with the wandering voice in the background for 4 or 8 bars before your vocals come in.

Also, at the last chorus you can maybe overlay a female voice with yours- same pitch to add some variety and more emphasis on the climax of the song. That would really add another dimension - it is a sort of love song, whether about a person or something else. Therefore it would be really cool to give "the love" a voice at the end of the song!
