Drop in the Ocean weekly word. Community

Howdy folks'.
On starting these write-ups about these words I am often left thinking for days, how to write an opinion on the word chosen. This one is no different.
Anyone new to reading my posts. For a few weeks now I have been taking part in a weekly contest hosted by the @Buddyup group. The group designates a word to write on (optional) and members of the group all write on the same word. The posts are presented on a Monday in the Buddy Up discord server,
https://discord.gg/3d5H3K8
and discussed in a knowledge gaining environment or opinion sharing in a friendly environment.
This weeks word is Communicate.

Communicating is not such an easy thing. With the majority of language, there is a dual meaning to words or variation in pronunciation. Sometimes two different words can have a similar meaning. It can be hard at times to see the subtle difference. In this post, I aim to show an instance of this, and the misuse of a word can often give the wrong impression.

Community.

A community is more than I.
It takes many individuals to make a community.
How do we look at what a community is? For this post, I would like to compare what a community is, compare it to a group. I think there is a distinct difference between both of them which is often used to benefit groups when they call themselves a community.

I have not looked up ay definitions for community or for groups. This is just how I see the world.
To show this I am going to use the experience of Steemit and Discord. I am well aware I may describe an individual group or community based on just my own ignorant opinion. So I will avoid using any names as examples. I also note that they are many parts to some groups and communities, They cannot be judged on one merit alone.

Community 1.jpg

Community begins with a place, Individuals in an area come together and form a community or group. Depending on the purpose of the individual's would determine if it was a community or a group.

A group which forms has a task or an objective. It could be an art group, reading group, music group or other. All are given alternative names like crafts, or literature or band. These are groups formed in a community, Maybe supported by a community. The biggest difference between a group and a community I think is a group is out to profit itself. A community is there to benefit everyone.

A group may be formed within a community to achieve certain goals or tasks. Maybe, achieve its own goals through support from a community. A group does not always mean a community, through a community is made up of a group, sometimes groups of groups.

The word community to me seems to be made from two other words'. Common and Unity, on that interpretation of the word, I would take it to mean what is good or bad for the common unity of people.

Community spirit 3.jpg

Couuminty Spirit, this is something a bit between both, not always, much of the time though there are benefits from helping the community. To illustrate this I would like to use Calumam as an example.
Though there is a possibility of some reward for helping others. Calumam demonstrates that if it happens fine, I will deal with it if it comes around. He works on the how can I help you now mindset and finds some solutions to those questions.
Calumam is building a community from the ground up. He is building it with people who want to be there, who want to interact with others who are there. He does this with his own time invested and the friendships he builds up with others. I should mention Penderis here too, He does a lot in the Buddy up group and some other groups in the background. Work which more often is not seen by many. This giving of time may or may not get rewarded, The giving of the time is however Very much so in line with community Spirit.

I say this in comparison to some other groups. Who are more about making individual profits, through chasing airdrops on every crypto out there. I am not for or against airdrops. I merely use this as a comparison to a community or a group.

One is organised for the benefit to all. While the other is designed around personal gain, To move it beyond a group would be to move it to a club. Each club may represent a part of the whole Crypto community. They are all however groups within it.

I might debate a very thin line above, with my words on the community.
I do think it is a line which should be looked at when joining various servers in discord.
Much of the time,
I think that people join too many servers too fast.
Not every server is there to serve you.
Of those that will serve you, There are guidelines to follow.
To sum it up, when you enter a server, are you in the Looking for information room.
Or the OK, I'm here now how can I help room.

Sort:

community starts with one but cannot survive with add ons

It is hard with discord, easy to join so many, then see if they are a group or a community, time to do some weeding again for me, to many servers on the left.

Did I communicate this difference ok?

I think you did wonderfully and I agree with what you have said here.

The word community to me seems to be made from two other words'. Common and Unity

For without it nothing comes together and we are all on our separate ways.

Loved your post :)

You communicated this beautifully @jan23com and I have joined several different servers since starting my journey here, and have loved the communities.. the groups not so much. I found my home at BuddyUP though, I just fit in there, and I'm comfortable there, and can be myself there. It was so natural, not forced, and we really have grown together. I see it everyday. I can not say enough about @calumam for what he's created here and I love that we are just one big happy community family. Loved this Jan!

Community and communication do go very well together. Would be hard pressed to have a great community without transparent communication.

I really like your distinction between community and group. It is some great advice and makes a lot of things bit more clear especially how we operate here on steemit.

You definitely described the BuddyUP community well. As in, I joined many discord servers, to test out the waters. There are a lot of interesting groups that I may benefit from every now and then, but nothing stuck out like BuddyUP. I like to hang out there. I like to communicate with the members. It's a special place , a virtual home <3
