Sleep Paralysis or REM Atonia is something that happens to you every time you sleep. It's to stop us from acting out dreams in our sleep. It can happen on the onset of sleep due to REM rebound. Anyway, it can be scary being paralyzed, but you don't have to be. You are not seeing through your eyes or hearing anything, it is dream imaginary and hallucination. Sure your family were nearby, but you were experiencing half-asleep dream. There are people who spread fear of sleep paralysis and reading their horror stories will in turn put you in a state of fear. However, I can assure you I have experienced sleep paralysis consciously quite a lot and they have never been scary. Just stay calm and try to drift off to sleep. If you must get up then calmly try to move your fingers and you'll break free from it. Your body is doing this for your protection, not to harm you.
