Illustrating a cross-discipline production pipeline

in #drawing4 years ago

In my 'day job' (an odd way to put it, but a good enough placeholder till I think of some better way to define my income-making activities- I recently worked with some brilliant people on a cross-discipline assignment task.

Students from Creative Writing came up with a short story, which our Animation students turned into a story reel (images on a timeline), and the Digital Media lot created VR and AR outputs which combined and springboarded from that. As a way to demonstrate the process, I made this little illustration.

I've really tried to push a bit more of an abstract style, and I'm pretty happy with the result. Scroll down/swipe across for detailed character closeups and process drafts.

Drafts- working it out

These next three images are my 'thumbnail/brainstorm drafts, figuring out what to include and beginning to rough out placement and characters.

In the end I used the second version and did some tweaking to arrive at this rough, ready for inking and colouring.

I’m not sure how to feel about your abstract characters, the shapes are pretty cool? 😅

The cross discipline project sounds pretty cool, does everyone get to see the outcome at the end and do they collaborate with each other over the duration?

Vaguely related, in my head universe “day job” is a “normal” job and “night job” is doing illegal things 😆

Ha ha well of course I'm never doing illegal things so i'm not sure that's a workable description for me. The project went well, all the students were encouraged to follow up with the other people across disciplines to see how their outcomes developed. Overall it went well, room for improvement as always. thanks for the comment!

It’s always a case of deciding when it’s good enough isn’t it 😅

Was this the guinea pig project or have you been running stuff like this for a while? Seems pretty new if you need to do a flowchart for it 🙃

it's just part of a suite of outcomes we need to present to satisfy the requirements of a grant we got to do the project. If it would be a flowchart for actual purpose it would look a lot different
