Haircut

Yeah so I just did a thing.

Quick question, why is everyone that buys something or does something and posts it on facebook start it with that headline? Bravo, you did something today as well as lacking creativity to announce something interesting.

Ok rant over, I feel better and it's time to announce that "thing" I did yesterday.

Still stuck in the pandemic, Ontario has started opening up a few shops but still not the hair salons. Although pet groomers have... Do not dress up as a pet in order to be "groomed" please. I can see some people trying.

My daughter has been wanting a haircut for a while and also hates when I brush her hair so my patience has grown thin and so I dared to cut her hair. The only hair cutting experience I have is cutting my sons hair which is pretty simple. Take the top part of his hair, tie it, shave around it. Once the initial cut is done, the maintenance is pretty easy. Tie it up, shave. His hair is passed his ears in length and when tied up, we call it his wolf's warrior tail, well in his case it's more like wolf pup because he is young and the tail is still short.

For Frankie, my daughter, is a different story. She did not want a pups warrior tail. She is a spunky 4 yr old child and she needs something that goes with it, that is easy brushing, easy maintenance. The only thing I can think of is a bob cut. Short in the back, long in the front. But how to create that successfully? With research and Youtube videos!

I started with brushing and wetting her hair as her hair is naturally light and fluffy and that's what hairdressers do anyways.

I sectioned her hair, wet it some more and got ready for cutting. Don't worry I fixed that one part in the middle, I almost got OCD just seeing it like that.

And chop chop away we go! It was hard to determine the length to cut it at knowing hair shortens when it dries. I took a little more off but not that much, cutting a straight line is sometimes hard but in this case with the bob haircut, the middle is straight but then I have to start cutting on an angle the more I get to the sides.

Difficulty level 2 here, where her hair is started to curl and its making it hard to see if I got an ok straight line happening or if I have a few that need to be snipped shorter. The next step after this is to take that already cut hair, grab it sideways so that I can cut it in a 45* angle. I didn't want that straight flat cut, I wanted to get that nice rounded layered look in the back. So this process had to be repeated for every layer that I cut in the back.

Seeing as how I am taking too long to perfect that 45 angle, her hair was starting to dry. Difficulty is now at level 3 with having to now cut the sided at a proper angle downwards to give that bob look. Not only is it hard to get it on one side but also having to do the same thing on the other side so that it looks the same. Oh boy.. Maybe its a level 4 instead.

Time to section new uncut hair and let the kid be a kid for a moment. She has been a trooper for being patient with me and understanding the importance of being still. So get all silly girl and use up that energy. You got 2 minutes.

Difficulty level 5/6. We can see here that I got the angle going pretty good as her hair is drying off and we can see the fruit of my labor. Why the difficulty? I have to make bangs. Her bangs were so long and always in her face, but not only that, I had to determine how wide of a bang would be good for her as she chews those side bangs which resulted in hair that was originally shorter than the angled lengths on the sides. She also made it hard because now she was able to see the hair fall when I cut it which distracted her from keeping her head up... A LOT. Her bangs were drying, I couldn't tell if I was getting a nice cut and so I just chopped what seemed like a straight length and then took the comb to almost the ends and snipped away with the scissors being vertical. I saw hairdressers do that before and it really helped in this case. You can see in the picture that there are still a few strays to cut away and so I fixed those up, did the tour of head as it was dry to make sure of any parts that I missed.

Here is a picture of the morning test. What does it look like in the morning before brushing? I think it passes the test.

What do you think?

Here are some before picture with her hair being longer.

And now...

...She saw a bug. Wasn't happy lol.

What do you think? Was it worth doing it myself or should I have waited?

Ha, looks good!

Cheers for the advice on the pups warrior tail, I cut my boy's sand although it is all long at the moment I write fancy that style of long on top and shaved sidedness!

Thanks!

I do like it as well. It taps into our indigenous roots. Perhaps I will write about it shortly, he is due for the shave soon anyways :)

Aye, you totally should! Even better he is due, you can document it in pictures like this one! :0)

I will be able to do it in about 2 days. Got super busy with gardening and the kids school stuff and all.

All in good time :P

I think spunky was a good way to describe your daughter, also not to bad for a first time hair cut. With Summer in full swing I am sure she will enjoy the shorter hair.

Thank you :)
I can't think of a better word lol, I can think of many words but spunky suits her best. The only downfall to this haircut in the summer is the bugs can get to her neck easier but with the heat she will definitely appreciate it.

You did a good thing, there! She's so cute!

Still no hair salons here. I am lucky - FTM - my hairdresser doesn't operate out of a salon. She'll have a go at my head next week. I can't wait!!

Thank you ^_^ She was really happy with it and when she bathed she did not want to wash her hair thinking it would under her new haircut lol.

Everyone needs a haircut these days. Except for me, I need an upgrade LOL I got dreads done back in March and it needs fixing like every two weeks because they are young dreads. It has been 3 weeks I think since the last "upgrade" and it really looks like I am overdue. I am so fuzzy! But I am grateful for having dreads, I have always wanted dreads for years.
