Heel means walking alongside without pulling. Before you put the dog on a heel, give him or her 3-5 minutes to get their excitement out.
Always have the dog sitting on your left side. This is a good transition from a regular walk to a heel.
Put your right thumb through the loop and your left hand holding the leash but make sure you have some clack in the leash. ALWAYS HAVE YOUR LEFT ARM DOWN, WITHOUT ANY TENSION, SO THERE IS NO TENSION THAT GOES TO THE DOG.(WHEN WE ARE WALKING OUR ARMS ARE DOWN, JUST STROLLING ALONG). DOGS CAN PICK UP ON OUR ENERGY, SO STAY CALM.
You can repeat this command because it is a command in motion and there are plenty of distractions.
*IF THE DOG IS PULLING TO THE LEFT, PULL HIM OR HER TO YOU AND SAY, "HEEL". GIVE SMALL SNAPS ON THE LEASH MORE WITH YOUR WRIST THEN YOUR ARM. IF THE DOG RUNS AHEAD OF YOU, THEN LET HIM OR HER REACH THE END OF THE LEASH, PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR CHEST, HOLDING ONTO THE LEASH, THEN PIVOT INTO THE TURN TO THE RIGHT AND PULL THE DOG, WHILE SAYING, "NO", "HEEL", SO IT IS NEXT TO YOU ON THE LEFT SIDE.
*As long as the dog is walking alongside of you and paying attention, give plenty of praise, "Good boy or girl, Heel."
