Hello friends,
I wanted to share some interesting facts on Border Collies with you and of course some beautiful photos of my border collie to go along with it.
9 interesting facts on border collies
(1) Border collies get their name from the borders of Scotland and England where they were bred.
(2) Border collies are very energetic dogs as they have high energy levels and thus they need constant daily activity to drain out their energy or they will get bored and start to chew things up around the house or in the garden.I learned the hard way when I first got a collie, he chewed all the mats in the house, the curtains, and the wall skirtings while being only 6 months old.
(3) They are extremely intelligent dogs and amongst many surveys are ranked at the most intelligent dogs. They were originally bred to be herding dogs and retrievers, therefore, making them quick learners. When I teach my collie tricks he learns them in less than an hour and he knows them well and can do them on demand, which just shows you how quick they learn.
(4) You get two types of border collies, the smooth and rough coat. The smooth coat border collie has straight thin hair and sheds less which is the most common type of collie as its suitable for herding and the rough coat collie has a thick coat which can sometimes even contain curls. In the picture below you can see Cody has a smooth coat.
(5)The name Collie comes from the cellic word "colley" meaning useful and border refers to the borders where this breed originates from (see number 1).
(6) The border collie lives on average from 10-15 years.
(7) They are extreemly emotional and loyal dogs who love to be around people and other dogs.
(8) Border collies take 10-15 minutes power naps in order to boost their energy levels back to full potential and then they need a release thus most trainers suggest 3 walks a day for approximately 45 minutes to tire them out so they don't rip things apart in the middle of the night.
(9) Border collies can weigh up to 27-45 Kg's and can grow up to 18 -55 cm's in size.
