Doggo goes for a flight

in #dogifsteenut6 years ago

Well, the first and easiest leg of our moving to another country is in the rear-view and it wasn't the most pleasant experience for the dog but this was to be expected.

She immediately knocked over the water feeder and made the towel wet

This is not to suggest that the airline did anything incorrectly, it is just, i would imagine, a very terrifying experience for them because they have no idea what is going on.

The staff were extremely accommodating and even though I arrived hours before I needed to just because I too, am a nervous traveler, they told me that I could use the first-class lane and come back just 45 minutes before my flight so that the dog didn't have to be separated from me for as long as possible.

So we got a hot dog and took a seat

My dog is pretty well-behaved so I didn't really need to worry about her running round the terminal, which I wouldn't have allowed anyway. She immediately drew the attention of the kids, but I had to be careful about this because for some reason, Nadi doesn't care much for children.

I can only imagine what goes on in her brain about this situation because as I was walking away from her to go through security she was standing at full attention and then started barking at me like "hey! Take me with you! What are you doing???"

The flight was early, and the ground staff were very attentive and the arrived at oversize bag claim just a little while after my checked bag did.

I made the mistake of letting her out of the cage for some hugs after we were reunited and there was no chance she was going back in the cage at that point. I am sure she now associates that contraption with the most terrible moments of her life.

Unfortunately, she has to do it one more time as we are now in Bangkok and the international portion of our flight is yet to come.

Here's to hoping that the level of care that we experienced from Chiang Mai to Bangkok is repeated on the next portion of the journey to Da Nang.

Overall, i would say that I definitely overthink this process only because this dog is the only real "family" that I have over here anymore and I will quickly turn into a crazy person if I ever feel she is in danger. Bangkok Airways did a fine job putting me and the dog at ease.

Upon my arrival a friend told me that the best thing you can put in that cage is a shirt that you recently wore and that puts the dog at ease (well, as much as they can be in an unfamiliar and loud environment like the cargo hold of a plane can be.)

Sort:

Have a safe rest of your trip, bro.

I would highly recommend you get a squirt gun and fill it up with urine, hot sauce and small bits of glass to help you fend off any travelers with cornovirus. You can never be too careful these days, and sometimes people need to be blinded so you can be safe.

Hope all goes smoothly! And everyone has a nice journey!

Good luck with the new house!

Poor dog and poor you. I don't own a dog, only had my grandmother's dog who I loved so much and passed away years ago but I can understand how you feel. And the dog as well. Must be terrifying for her to be separated from you.
The good thing is she'll be happy to be reunited with you again when you land.
Plus a whole new world is expecting her, full of adventure. She'll be happy.
I haven't heard the trick with the shirt but it's a good one.
I've been reading your blog and I know how much you care about her. She's a lucky dog, lucky to have an owner like you, honestly.
She's going to forget this experience soon, won't hold it against you.
Have a safe flight.

I feel for you and dogo. I had to do something similar for my parrot but mine was perfect timing. Like kids they go through a testing time and call it the terrible two's. She was in quarantine at Heathrow for a good 12 weeks and I never really experienced the crap parrots give you. She arrived in South Africa and was just grateful to be home as she sees me as her family.

Occasionally, when my wife and I go out of town our regular people aren't available to watch our dog. In those cases we have to take her to the vet and have her boarded. Usually when we do that, we sleep with a blanket the week before she has to go. Then we give that to the vet to keep in her cage with her. I don't know if it really helps her, but it makes us feel better :) I hope the next leg of your journey goes well. Best of luck and godspeed!

Glad you and the pup made it through. Welcome to Vietnam!

should've tossed in a gopro to watch the journey ! 👍

I hope the move went well! I am in love with Nadi!!! Cuteness overload, seriously!

I hope all went well for the second leg of the journey sir gooddream. She is so cute and I'm glad the airline people were so caring.

it went well, thanks to the agency it was actually really easy...well, for me anyway... i don't know what they had to go through but if it was anything like everything else that happens in Thailand, i'm sure it was a hassle!

That's very good to hear! You hear nightmare stories of airlines losing luggage, can you imagine if the lost a pet?

The Guardian of the chairs! Ruff ruff. Stinkin kids keep away! Haha. I see she has her little toy too. The shirt was a good idea. We did that with our dogs when they were puppies. Left something we wore in the cage with them. I’m sure it was loud in there. At least the trip was relatively short. Plus side I suppose. Almost there I guess?

I didn’t realize how long her ear hair was. For some reason our groomer trims Molly and Peppers short. I like them either way. Good luck with the rest of the trip!!

oh i've been here for a couple days already. It was nice to be done with it. I will likely trim Nadi's ear hair short next time because it's less to comb

True! Les is more. Molly's ears get matted because she tends to scratch at them more than Pepper. Hope you settle in fast!
