My Wife Wants Us To Get A Puppy: I’m Not So Sure About It. What Do You Say?

My wife told me the other day that she was wanting to get a puppy. We both had dogs when we were kids and loved them. Our friends have little dogs and now my wife says she thinks she wants a Yorkshire Terrier. I had a German Shepard and that dog was my constant friend and angel in disguise. Here is a picture of me and my dog when I was young.

As you can see the dog that I had was a larger dog and the one that my wife is wanting is a tiny little thing. I have read about these Yorkies and all of the information that I have seen says that they are a little dog with a big attitude. I watched a youtube video and apparently Yorkies need a human with a strong personality to serve as their pack leader otherwise the little dog with try and rule the house. My personality is more of a fun loving easygoing guy. When I get around kids or dogs they usually get hyper and silly. My wife would defiantly be the boss of the dog so I’m not to worried about the training.

The Yorkie needs to be groomed every day and it is recommended that they keep a puppy cut that is easier to keep clean. They are one of the top ten most popular breeds in the USA so there has to be something good about them. A couple of years ago one of them took best in breed at Westminister. If we do get one, we will keep its hair short and not like this one.

I like the idea of a small dog that could be happy in our apartment and one that could ride with us in the car. Do you have recommendations or suggestions before we drop some serious coin on a puppy. These little dogs come with a big price-tag. I shared in a previous post the story about how I bought some TRON Dogs and my wife was not impressed. Everybody always suggest that we get a rescue dog but they are all part pit bull at the shelters in our area. She has her heart set on a Yorkie unless I can find a significant reason why we should not get one.

One stipulation that I gave my wife is that if we do get on of these Yorkies she has to dress it up like Chewbacca at Halloween time. If anyone on Steemit has experience with a Yorkie please give me some feedback before we actualy find one and bring it home.

Whatever dog you get, I highly recommend researching the alpha dog training. It is about how dogs think about who is in charge, and the subtil things you do that signals to them either that you are alpha or they are alpha. If you try to train them the way a human thinks, they will be confused and frustrated. I have 2 rescue poodles and have also had them as puppies. They don't shed hair which is great, but they must have hair cuts or their hair gets very matted. One of my current poodles is called a Party Poodle and she is really smart and retains much of the old dog instincts that have been bred out of a lot of dogs today. There are a lot of dog "factories" with poor breeding practices, so do your research. Bad genes mean health problems and potentially shorter lifespan. Poodles come in all sizes and I prefer them, but best wishes in whatever you choose.

Thank you so much for the good advise. We will surely heed to your warnings. I know my own personality is not naturally alpha so maybe I need to go to school first. My wife has been a nanny for a long time and she is good at discipline and training kids so maybe that will translate to a dog too. She likes the look of a yorkie poo or a malti poo. I just want one who will ride in the car good and is small enough carry along with us on trips or to the office. Thanks again for the good advise.

when your wife happy, you will happy too. so, what are waiting for?

Very wise point. Thank your for your quality advise.

What's the fun in having a Yorkie if you can't dress him up as Chewbacca? Unrelated note, I've always wanted to dress Pixie up for Halloween but have never had the heart to actually make her that miserable.
Have you considered a corgi? We think Pixie might have some corgi in her, and in the distant future when we get another dog, a corgi will definitely be near the top of our list.

The U.S. has the highest dog population in the world.

as long as you can still happy your wife happy

Get a cat bro.

Very funny!

Honestly, cats do better. Small and neat.

My family had a bichon frise and he was a really great dog. Very trainable and loving. His favorite thing was to be brushed; so, he'd often bring his brush to you (carrying it in his mouth) and drop it in front you to get you to brush him. Now that I think of it he was kind of a diva...

What did you call him?

His name was Samson. He was my sister's dog initially but more-or-less just became a family pet. She named him that because he had so much hair.

I've always loved dogs and have an 8 year old black labrador right now. I won't be getting another after her. If I could rely on friends to look after her when I want to go somewhere, I might not feel that way, but no one wants to look after a big dog. Most people seem comfortable with the small ones.

Labs are great dogs and are a lot of fun. Some friends of ours have 2 and they escaped their enclosure. Our friends got a phone call from the local grocery store saying that the dogs went into the store and were captured on the dog food aisle gorging themselves on open bags of feed. The store is about 3 miles from their home. The dogs had tags with the phone numbers and they are good natured animals. The store was really good about the whole incident.
