This doc is a classic HBO Documentary from the late 90's called American Hollow. This film tells the tale of a close-knit Appalachian family that has changed little in the last 100 years.
This is an interesting documentary to get a sneak peak into the lives of a people and a culture most of us would never otherwise experience. There's a lot of great things about Appalachia like the beautiful part of the country they live in, living off the land, and a strong culture.
Unfortunately this area of the country is also very impoverished and unlike other poor people in the inner cities of Americas cities, very little money goes to Appalachia so there's not a lot of services or help for the people. The area has a lack of medical care, lack of dental care, and it's sad to see in some of these Appalachia documentaries everyone looks like they have meth mouth as they start giving their babies Mountain Dew in their bottles so it's the worst area in the country for dental problems.
Anyhow, here's a look at an Appalachian family. Give it a watch I'm sure you'll enjoy it and also appreciate everything you have a little more after seeing these people without even running water. A Doctor interviewed for part of the movie who does free work for the people there said it's even worse here than in some areas back in his country of India which is known for having a lot of poverty.
