Thing-a-Day: Game Night

Ok so, I made it to Friday. It's been a fun...ish experiment. But there is no way I can keep up this much output, such as it is. However I will admit it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Maybe in the future I'll go bigger, but for now it was reasonably sized goal. And I do feel a small for having done it. So for Friday I present, my character for the D&D 5e game I'm playing in.

Yesmar Nodrog, 5th Level Chef Artificer/Alchemist

So over the years my playstyle has evolved from "Me Fighter/Barbarian, Hit with Stick" Powah Ghamr to "I just want to run my shop in peace" Support role. The exception to this was Angus "Lord White Privilege" McFife who became Angus "Lord Wight Privilege" McFife after gaining and losing the Eye and Hand of Vecna. But that is a story for another time.

Side note: LWP was running an adventuring business, Acquisitions Incorporated had just come out. Much fun, would recommend. However... by the end he was just using would-be-adventures as fodder for a Minotaur that he hired to work a maze in his town and capturing their souls to feed his psuedo-lichdom. It was a whole thing. That game was crazy, just ask @generikat and @jacobtothe. They were there. @jacobtothe was even employee of the month once.

Anyway, back to Yesmar. So at some point in my gaming career I stopped playing frontline meat-shields. I think it was during... 4th edition... when everything was kinda bland so I started looking at ways to make the my character stand out more. And since nobody like playing the support I started running the heal bot for a while. But what I really wanted to do was make a crafter. So most of my more recent characters have wanted to crafting. But 5e isn't really set up for crafting... until the Artificer.

Now the crafting rules in 5e are still near nonexistent, but there is now a class that specializes in making magical things and they do get some bonuses. I also thought a chef would be fun to play.
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything introduced a feat called Chef that lets you make food and treats for the party as well as containing the Artificer rules, sold.

So I make up an adventurer based Gordon Ramsey, spelled his name backwards, and viola! Instant character concept. I re-flavor (pun intend) the Alchemist specialization as cooking. So Happy! I enter the game... only to find out that everyone is dead and doesn't need to eat...

And since we were summoned to do a thing, I'm going to have a hard time changing concepts. But I think I have an out. We will see. So how about you? Ever make a character who's concept didn't fit the campaign? Let me know in the comments. Until next time!

I found to be writing daily I needed to not post it (since discovering Obsidian which I initially grabbed for better roleplay notes and then went and built an organiser out of it because I have this love/hate relationship with tooling) because when I'm just writing for me I just write, whereas habitually if I'm going to be posting something publicly it has to be more comprehensible XD

I usually recommend weekly posting (or 2-3 times a week maybe depending) to people who want to post regularly but daily is too demanding.

No Head of Vecna? XD

I've played forum roleplays where a couple of my characters started out fine and fitting in (I slotted in somewhere between the normal sensible human players and the hardcore power gamer with mcs) but because of the way I designed them, they hit a point and suddenly escalated in relative power so I was like oh and decided that they could return home and resume their apprenticeship jobs (it worked out that they'd basically taken the equivalent of a gap, didn't plan it that way, didn't plan anything really, was just going with things XD) and started up a new character. Unfortunately shortly after that the servers suffered a catastrophic catastrophe and a lot of the forums just completely lost all their data and we were so demoralised that after an attempt at rebooting, we all just ended up drifting apart.

I kind of want to look into joining play by post again but I'm too lazy to look x_x

I'm character-driven (build campaigns around characters) so haven't had that problem as permaGM. The handful of occasions that I did get to play, the GMs were pretty cruisy with whatever.
