Fresh frogs, fresh fish, fresh pork is what you will see if you get up early enough. On our second day in Vietnam, in the city of My Tho, we got up at the break of dawn to explore the beautiful place dubbed as the river city.
When it comes to fish markets, people start their work very early. Even earlier if you are a fisherman. The city is built along Mekong River and lots of folks around here make their livelihood from its abundant river life.
The fish market was just a short walk away from where we were staying. Got up at 5 in the morning and made our way with my sister and mom. In the early hours, it was quiet. The fishermen getting ready to head out. Some are sleeping on their tuk tuks as we like to call it. The trucks are starting to deliver square blocks of ice. As they leave them on the ground and the ice gets exposed to the humid air, tiny droplets of vapor comes out, as it lays there, waiting to be collected by a fish monger.
When we got to the market, it was buzzing. There are bikes, trolleys going up and down delivering produce. Sellers shouting to get some customers. People haggling to get better prices. Kids on their push bikes helping out set up stalls.
There are also some people selling refreshments as well as breakfast and snacks. We bought some juices from a girl who seem to be bored as her day was slow. No one was buying, because it was a tad too early. By buying from the locals, it is our little way of helping. We bought two but later we bought some more for the others back in the hotel.
We also bought some fruits, nuts and some breakfast. We ate at the markets, figured the others may already have eaten. Stay tuned for the next adventure as we travel to my mother's hometown and visit our relatives.
Until then, safe travels.
