~DIY~ 2005 Lincoln Navigator Door Lock Switch Replacement ~DIY~

in #diy6 years ago

What is happening my fellow DIY’ers. Splatts your DIY guy is back with a quick little project that can help you maintain your sanity. :click :click :click :click CRAP my door lock button no longer works. Yet, if you hit it 1,000 times, squint your eyes, cross your toes, sing “Kumbaya” and pick your nose it will eventually work. Just follow these easy steps and I can help you maintain your sanity with this little DIY project

Not all cars are the same, we can agree on that, but the procedure is pretty similar. WARNING you are messing with plastic parts that do require a little force to be removed. So when removing door panel parts, apply gradual even pressure. If your lucky you can just pop a piece of plastic trim up that holds the switch and TA-DA your 90% finished. With the “Newer” vehicles this is an unlikely story.

In order to access this annoying door lock switch that is no longer working, we need to pull off the door panel. Take a close look all over the door and search out any type of screws that might be holding the door panel in place. I have noticed a lot of the time that these act as a secondary type of securement to the door. Push-pins are typically the way the door panels are held on and they always break. So be ready to hit the parts store for replacements. Alright let’s get this little project started, and gather up the tools and parts we need.

Removing the Door Panel

On this 2005 Lincoln Navigator driver door I have located all the screws that need to be removed in order to get this door panel off and gain access to the wiring and the switch. There are only 5 screws but you have to make sure to look everywhere to ensure that you find them all.

After removing all the screws that are securing the door panel to the vehicle we need to figure out how this door panel comes off. If you slightly pull out from one of the lower corners and you don’t get any movement...STOP!! it could be like this door panel and have these plastic hooks. These are what hold the door panel tight to the door instead of using the push pins that you end up breaking and replacing.

Crap, I exposed the inside of the door how embarrassing and a little ahead of schedule, but that is ok. In order to get enough movement in the door panel I have to remove the gray plastic piece around the interior door door handle. Just be really careful and gently pry with your fingers. Try not to use any type of screw drivers as this could scratch or gouge the plastic.

With steady even pressure from the bottom of the door, lift up on the door panel. While lifting, apply pressure against the door panel to help unhook the plastic hooks from the door

Then after your feel the hooks release and gently pull the door panel away. Watch out for the door lock pin, that sticks up through the door panel. You know the little rod that goes up and down, indicating if the door is locked or not. 😉

With the door panel away from the door we can see the wiring harness for the windows, door locks, speakers, and possible any lights that might be built into the door. I have a little speaker up on the pillar of the door so this added an additional plug. So it looks like I have 5 plugs that need to be unhooked so I can pull the door panel away and gain access to the switch in order to remove it.

After completely removing the door panel from the door, place it on the drivers seat or someplace where it won’t get scratched or damaged. Most of these style switches pop out really easy. It’s often getting to them that takes the most time and results in the most curse words being tossed around. Now, locate the door lock switch and take a look at how it is held in place. This one can be removed by simply squeezing on the sides of the switch and pushing it out.

Now simply push the new switch back into place until you hear a click. There you are done. YAHOO....Wait....we still have to put all this back together without breaking anything. It was a small miracle that we got it apart without an casualties, now if we can get it all back together, without a single breakage of any component....that puts a big W in the Win column.

Before you go slapping this door panel back into place. Hold it up and plug in the new switch and make sure it works first. On a rare occasion you can get a faulty part and it would totally stink to have the door put all back together and realize the switch doesn’t work. If the switch does indeed work, let’s get this door put back together.

Lining up all the plastic hook pieces and inserting the door lock pin though the door panel, use both hands and possibly a knee to apply even pressure across the door panel to make sure all the hooks are seated in their slots. Then slide the door panel down, locking it into place. Re-install the plastic piece around the door handle, then all that is left is a few screws.

Last couple of screws and this DIY project is done. It took about 1/2 hr and that is with taking all the photos.

Well there you have it everyone, with a 1/2 hour of your time and a few simple tools you can maintain your sanity and all is right and true once again in your vehicle....Well that is until you need to replace a driver seat due to the leather tearing apart, but that is for another day.

Thanks for stopping in and checking out another of my DIY projects. I hope this gives you people that little boost of confidence you need to tackle a little project like this yourself. Instead of paying $100 to have someone else fix it.

I keep wondering what service Splatt would pay for. 🤔
Nice one Handyman.

Not many, but I do draw the line when it comes to working on sewer pipes. 🤮

What does it mean if I was picking my nose AS I was reading your line about picking your nose...

You are the handyman I aspire to be. Until then, I'm gonna stick with photography. Thanks for sharing!

Then you must have a door lock switch that isn’t working and you are are doing what it takes to get that switch to work. 🤣🤣

hahaha smart man.

Geeze la wheeze that looks like a lot of work for a Saturday. Or is it geeze Louise? Whatever! Way to attack the weekend @jlsplatts. So, any Halloween plans for the kiddos and Mr. “I don’t need a spleen” Splatts?

We are going to hit the haunted corn maze tomorrow night but @lil-splatts already went with his buddies so @kuku-splatts is going to see if she can make it farther than 50 feet in without turning around and leaving. Lol

This little project didn’t take long. I’m just finally getting around to doing it. Lol

Oh no, by herself…? Screw that. Too many spiders or something to do that at night by yourself. If your family dresses up, come enter my contest! I love to check out all of the cool costumes. Clever or ironic costumes are my favorite ::wink:: ::wink::

Oh no I would never have her go through a haunted corn maze by herself. Last year, It was a person with a giant bloody bunny head and a chainsaw that scared her. He snuck up behind her and fired up the chainsaw. Yep...game over...LOL I saw him and thought to myself...no he isn’t...yep...he did... A-Hole!!!

Oh and it’s haunted? I totally missed that. The haunted places where real people jump out at you are crazy. I always think that those hired haunters are lunatics, jumping out at unsuspecting people, they liable to catch an elbow to the face. Haha

Well you guys have fun! Let us know who had the best costume.

Edit: Congrats on the curie trail!! You sure know how to get their attention. Good job @jlsplatts!

I love it! I love watching you hit these trails like this @jlsplatts, you have a proven method. It’s fun to watch.

Thanks brother!!! I’m going to keep trying to do more things like this. It’s just time consuming putting the post together. Getting that @curie voting trail attention makes the time somewhat worth it. Then you look at the trending page and see the stuff that is getting $300, $400 shoot sometimes $1000 and your just in Awww. Then again 90% of those votes they are getting are paid for. Bidbots at work. Lol.
Sorry for the mini-rant
Cheers

Well, you started it!

Getting that @curie voting trail attention makes the time somewhat worth it.

Would you agree their vote is what makes it worth it or the lack of their vote causes you to question the platform? It seems to me we’re all looking for the same vote. Remember when a curie vote would put us in trending? All I see there now is 1 Photo with a caption that says something like “Spain” and it’s in trending with a thousand votes.

Add to that, I’m seeing more and more accounts now do like @geneeverett is in the process of doing, powering down.

We’re looking for the same individual vote. New members are having difficulties interacting. Veteran members are powering down. Robots are at the top of trending.

Math may be the only thing I’m half decent at but everyone knows what 0+0 is.

It’s crazy to think that most people are searching out that Onevoting trail vote. Everything has become so automated due to the amount of available time people can spend combing through posts. I spent about 45 min this morning scrolling through the New posts. Looking for something I feel is worth resteeming, I threw out a couple 100% upvotes to random people but nothing really caught my eye. Then I glance at the trending page and just say....wow... BidBot much?

Oh boy, that looks so complicated but you bring it over like it was nothing. We do this and that, and this and that and voila! It's done :D I can imagine that an average person would get grey hair during the process :) I definitely would :)

Thank you for sharing! I hope I will never have to do it, but if I would I would know how just thanks to you :)

If I have to repair something I'd call you, I'm a real mess repairing and I always lose the screws or spare parts.

But even so with your explanation you make it easy, if someone has the same problem for sure your way of teaching how to repair is a good guide.

Greetings
