I made a cheese plank quite a simple woodworking project, its more collecting wood pieces with nice figures...
Used some tools most people dont have but you could do this easily with a sander or a handplane.

I'm used to it but.if.you stand still it gets cold.
Better.to chop wood keeps you warmer!
I haven't made a cheese plank, but I once made a speaker enclosure that turned out quite nice, and has survived ~12 years in the wheelwell of a 1980 VW pickup truck I abused pretty hard as a work truck. I am sure your friend will greatly appreciate your hand made gift.
