DIY Solar system problems - Can you help?

in #diy6 years ago

Well if you've followed me for a while you'll know what this is about if you have just dropped in though maybe you can help?

What is it? - well I'm building an automated cooling and watering system for my greenhouse that is totally off the grid, both in water and electricity

Everything is in place and works independently but its the last autonomous bit I need to do, the problem is I keep running the battery flat overnight when the solar panels can't top it up.

So i need a way to disconnect the electronics from the battery and solar charger so that they can keep it topped up when needed. Any idea's or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

All the best

Dan

A simple and super inexpensive(15dollars) solution to your dilemma is to go on Amazon and purchase yourself a marine/rv disconnect switch. Most diy solar systems use these due to the low cost, I do as well.

I would agree with @book-of-wild
The VSR's would probably not be the best option as they would become a lot less effective as the battery ages and dissipates quicker.
Adding another battery may help as well, but you may need to look at the load on the photocell. I'm assuming that the temp-regulating fans and irrigation pump are running during daylight hours, while you are also charging the battery. Adding a battery may add load to the system to the point they are not getting fully charged or proper maintance voltage once they are charged or this could be part of the issue you are having right now.
