Need To Colonize Other Planets
..............................................................................................................................................................................................
Why set our sights so low?
Planets are over rated..
Colonizing a mere planet
Is a Failure of Imagination.

My response to a post by @sauravrungta
His point about the dangers of having all of our eggs in one basket is a good one. But why would we even WANT baskets? Why not decentralize, distribute widely and acquire massive redundancy for our species and our civilization?
He also mentions asteroids that almost hit earth frequently....
When given a lemon (Near Earth Objects )...make lemonade

We've been to the moon using 1950's technology. Today the tech is a little bit more advanced. Is it a stretch to think that we could catch a passing asteroid, hollow it out, put a spin on it (for gravity) insert an eco-system and live inside?
Kind of a like a cruise ship in space?
Why put our eggs on yet another planet..or two...
Why not have an armada of habitats?
It's more of that with current technology it's too hard and we should spread the eggs as soon as possible. So spread them where you can when you can. As soon as technology allows we go wherever it allows.
we have the technology...we've had it for some time.
We have the technology in a sense, that if we decided to do it, we could. But not in a sense that it is economically viable. Sure we could build a base on the moon, but for it to be worth anything, should everyone on earth died, it would cost us an insane amount of capital.
I'm reminded of an old saying
"the cowards stayed behind, the weak died along the way'
For a moon base to sustain a viable population (at least a few thousand) for an indeterminate amount of time, should earth go away, would be an insanely difficult undertaking. I don't think any single nation could do it currently.
failure of imagination.
a fairly rich rancher from texas could do it.
I think you are underestimating the difficulty of it all. Just sustaining the food production on the moon would be really hard.
Landing on the moon is not a software problem, it's the hardware problem. All the computations can basically be done on a caculator.
Your vacumn cleaner is more computationally powerful than moon landing technology.
so is your thermostat for your central heating and your washing machine.
Let's not even speak of your car..
your point?
what do I say to them?
Nothing.
Willful ignorance on such a scale is impenetrable
Mute them and/or ignore them in any possible way.
Then wash hands as soon as possible...
(use antibacterial)
I was alive when it happened.
I followed it very closely on TV.
How do YOU know what they would look like?
those guys were all highly trained former fighter pilots...
ever met a fighter jock?
and then there's this
oh yeah...we have sattelites in orbit around the moon RIGHT NOW.
that take pictures of what we left in 1969
at some point, technology will allow private groupings to flee the rest of humanity and colonize parts of space in this solar system, and then hopefully farther out
I suspect that Elon Musk would be willing to supply the transportation for intercept if he were offered sufficient money.
I want this one.
a co orbital
It's far enough away to be out of the reach of taxes..but close enough to pick up the internet and stay up to date with Steemit and Crypto.
I wonder how small a 'remodeling" package could be designed?
depends on the engineer's dilemma
give 3D printing a few more years and I suspect that the entire package could be fitted into a shipping container.
Used to be we could vote with our feet. The 100 mile 'rights free zone' around the US border now precludes that, and despite - perhaps because of - the immigration mania in the EU, similar things will be done there.
I shall hope our posterity can vote with their jets, instead.
Some of us, though neither cowards, nor weak, are too long in the tooth to pioneer such endeavors today.
Exactly. We've F ed up enough on earth. Maybe we try and fix what God gave us first before we go and screw up someplace else. Just because we can do something doesn't mean we should.
its a nice post.. i know many thing from your post
Despite being a planetary enthusiast, I completely agree with you.
There is no dearth of terraformable habitat in the near solar system.
It's going to be an exciting few decades for space exploration!
