Dear Steem community
It is my pleasure to educate members of this community on a culture unknown to many around the world.
Today, I am writing about(Masquerades )a culture to Nnewi people, a city in the present day Nigeria.
The history of Masquerade festival in this city is said to date as far back as 1918.
Masquerades are predominantly seen during Afiaolu( New yam festival); this is a traditional festival held annually, specifically in August every year.
The festival boosts of powerful masquerades such as: Ebunu, Ajofia, Omoba, Ijele, Ijele,Igbada, Otawuru Ikpo masquerade.
All these Masquerades are believed to have mysterical powers, hence were used to enforce laws and order in the society. This is because some of them looks very dreading, while others have mysteries yet to be uncovered.
Let me give a bit description of some of them.
•Ajofia had resisted an attempt to be burnt when the owner was not at home.
1.The masquerade uses its powers to get to it's venue before anyone with modern means of transportation, even when he travelles without any conventional means of transportation.
•Izaga... Also a masquerade with a mysterical powers that enables it to grow very tall and very short simultaneously and the same time.
• Otawuru Ikpo Masquerade is a bit more mysterious than others. The masquerade has the power and ability to dance or float on cassava leaves.
However, their powers are basically used to entertain tourists who throngs into the town yearly.
There are other masquerades without mysterical powers, but showcases their presence by just using sticks to flog each other, to show their strength and ability to endure pain as men.
•Finally the Adamma Masquerade
Adamma in English means a very beautiful maiden.
The masquerade is known for:
- Her enticing physical appearance
- Excellent dancing steps
- Colorful apperance
- Known only for entertainment
The masquerade is always accompined by a melodious drum beats.
Adamma has no mysterical powers.
