eat good food and lose weight: you just gotta eat the right thing

in #diet6 years ago (edited)

I previously mentioned in a blog post about how I lost 40 lbs by changing my life last year. However, i didn't focus on the most important aspect of it as much as I would have liked because I was trying to keep the length of the article a bit shorter.

When people see me that haven't seen me in many months (which is quite common over here as our expat population is very transient) they always want to know how it is that I lost so much weight. They presume it is because i must exercise like crazy. Although i do go to the gym now I didn't even start to exercise until I had already lost 10kg (22pounds.) Because the problem is that your size is mostly about what you eat.

There is a friend of mine that went on a vegan diet. Now i am not trying to say there is anything wrong with the vegan diet, I actually admire their willpower to not eat bacon. What I am trying to say is that this person, although he says he feels a lot better is still the same size that he was before he went on this diet.

My diet tastes great - if you enjoy meat and I would like to give a sample menu from an average day for me.

Breakfast:
3 egg omelette with cheese ham and onions
4 strips of bacon
1 glass of milk
1-17 cups of coffee

Lunch:
huge all beef patty fried with onions topped with mayo and mustard (no bread)
1 Diet Coke

Snack in the afternoon:
Pickles and assorted cheese

Dinner:
Chili con carne made with beef, tomato, kidney beans, onion, and bell pepper
loads of cheese melted in
loads of sour cream melted in
1 glass of milk ( I like milk)

Other stuff in the same day.
1-8 San Miguel Light beers

I mix up the menu from time to time and have cheesy roasted chicken, fried chicken (even from KFC is fine,) pork tenderloin, pork chops, tacos wrapped in lettuce leaves instead of tortillas, bacon salads loaded with ranch dressing and cheese, steak, ribs, fish, etc etc.

There are so many ways to make good food. There are even takeaway Thai curries that I can have like Penang, red or green, chicken and cashew nuts, all the isaan food (if you even know what that is)

and i drink beer every ...... single ...... day

Does this sound like a weight loss diet to you? Well it is. The only secret is that you have to keep your carbohydrate intake below 50 grams a day. This means no sugar, no candy, no bread, no potatoes, no full flavor beer, no soft drinks unless diet, no rice, no whatever-you-can-think-of-that-is for-sale-in-the-snack-isle-other-than-peanuts.

It really isn't that difficult. I for one never get tired of chili con carne and could eat only that for every meal and it would still be fine. You don't need to pay any attention to calories, just to carbs, which depending on your food addiction might be difficult for many people. I know i miss bread.

The danger of this diet is that you really shouldn't adapt it in the long term because well, your cholesterol will eventually go through the roof. I was a no-carb nazi for about 6 months, and now I am starting to phase a reasonable amount of them back into my diet. However, I very rarely drink full-flavor beer because that is likely what got me in bad state to begin with.

I understand that everyone is different with metabolism and what not but this diet works. However, you have to stick with it as it takes a while for it to take hold, so to speak. I never go hungry, starving yourself is one of the worst things you can do in a diet because you can send your body into hibernation of sorts where you no longer burn food. I just have to eat the right things when I am.

You can do it too if you want to.

As always thanks for reading and I hope someone out there finds it helpful.

obviously burning more than you take in is the failsafe. However, this plan has worked for me and many other people. For those who fail in other diets this is a better tasting one. I literally paid zero attention to calories and only to carbohydrate intake and lost more than 40 lbs. You are correct in saying that everyone is different and I definitely acknowledge that.

I'm not a nutritionist, doctor or, kinesiologist. I can only speak from something i tried and had it work... even when i wasn't exercising. There is no miracle weight loss but this one worked for me.

Don't be sorry for your criticism, i welcome it and thank you for contributing.

That is kind of a keto diet.

I usually do this diet 3 months per year.

But, beer is loaded with carbs, and you shouldn't be drinking that much of beer, if you want to stay in ketosis.

And the thing you said about cholesterol... Bad cholesterol doesn't go up if you eat lots of fat.

It is actually caused by sugars (carbs basically).

I read that from a scientific research if I'm not mistaken.

And what I like best about this diet is that fats keep you satiated for a long time.

When I start eating carbs, I just can't stop eating.

you are very correct. The beer i drink has 3g of carbs a bottle (San Mig Light) so depending on what else I had in that day, i can have a bunch of them.

That is fantastic news about the bad cholesterol and i hope you are correct!

I totally agree with you about fats keep you full. If i have a thai curry with rice i am hungry 1.5 hours later. If i have a steak I don't need to eat again for a long time.

Now I see that it's light beer.

I believe that most of the beers have a lot more carbs, eventhough I can't be sure, because caloric values are not printed on the bottle (atleast Croatian ones).

By the way, I love your breakfast.

I have the similar one every day for the past few years.

I eat 5 whole eggs with bacon every day, and put a little bit of olive oil on the top.

If I eat carbs in the morning, I get sleepy for some reason.

And just to confirm that statement I made about cholesterol.

My blood picture is perfect and you can see what I eat for breakfast every day.

Yes, diet is very important in my opinion, then we must stabilize our food because carbohydrate compounds that provide energy in the body in the form of calories. Carbohydrates are divided into two types, namely complex and simple carbohydrates.
As the name implies, complex carbohydrates contain many sugar molecules and are rich in fiber and thus require a longer process to digest in the body.
While simple carbohydrates contain fewer sugar molecules so that the digestion process becomes faster.

very good point. Thanks for pointing out the difference in the carbs. Unfortunately, in today's environment where the complex carbohydrates are always found in the easiest (and likely cheapest foods) we are accidentally able to gain weight. It is starting to happen to a lot of kids in Thailand whereas in the past South East Asians had always been quite svelte. Now with sugary snacks and Fanta taking hold, more often than not the kids are a bit chubby.

yes it is common,in Indonesia quite a lot of cases that occur in children's food even my child has experienced it and many others

Thank you for sharing your diet experience. I have had a ton of success with HFLC ( high fat low carb ) diet. I don't call it keto as I am not eating fat to satiety nor measuring my ketones, but I do monitor carb intake loosely ( between 20-30g a day ) and break to eat carbs when I feel my energy levels dropping out. ( I am active, I do Martial arts 2-4 times a week and will crash if totally depleted of carbs )

However I am a weirdo...usually vegetarian low carb if you can imagine that. Rarely i'll break for fish but like you do have beer every day.

Great Post @gooddream. I jealous your dietary routine..
Well, I don't really know much about diets. But I know for sure this is a good guide to sustaining a regular healthy growth.
Reduction of or possibly no intake of alcohol is good for our health with regularly exercises as well.
What can you say about an addition of few Cannabidiol daily?

I think that has something to do with marijuana right? If so I would go to jail for that in Thailand as they don't have a very liberal stance on weed.... yet.

Same here in Nigeria

Losing weight and keeping it off for a substantial amount of time is very difficult so kudos to you!

With that being said your unique formula may not be successful for others and I would argue outside of your personal weightloss success the diet could use ALOT of improvement before I would recommend it to other individuals.

As a friendly reminder your weight isn't the only factor in determining your health status so I would encourage yourself and anyone adopting a new diet to see how it also effects their other important bio markers.

Cheers!

Bachelors of Science in Exercise and Wellness, but by no means an expert.

I agree with you. I by no means think my diet should be adopted by anyone... even though i may have suggested it somewhere in the post...

I exercise 4 to 5 times a week now because I don't think you need to be a doctor to realize that eating cheese bacon and ranch dressing all the time might be slightly bad for you in the long run. :)

I'm glad to hear you are exercising 4 to 5 times a week as that is a feat in itself. Keep up the good fight and enjoy the health journey!

When I did my 3 month cut (20% body fat to 8%) the biggest thing I realized that dieting is essentially a calories in vs. calories out game. So much has to do with the nutritional content and being able to get the best macros while efficiently using your caloric intake. I found that my diet was basically the same every day (rotating carb intakes on days I worked out). (Oats, almonds, chicken, nuts, protein, egg whites, etc) If interested I can go more in depth on how I cut 30 lbs using intermittent fasting. Helluva article. Thanks for taking the time to write this up!

Man can you write about ur diet, i want to start doing a cut and it would help 2 get info from people who successfully did it

Jim Rohn once said: “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” It is certainly true. Taking good care of our bodies should be one of our utmost priorities. However, starving one's self is not advisable, it could even cause an ulcer. I totally i agree with you- we have to go on a diet. We might certainly not like the kinds of foods, but with time we will adapt to it.

I'm glad you have a diet that allows you to enjoy the pleasure of eating. no one should sacrifice that hahaha. Keep taking care of yourself.

Whao, i find your diet hard to believe. I used to think that when you eat lots of food and drink lots of soda, atleast once and week and eat lots of beef you're prone to be fat. But your idea is different and makes more sense

cant drink soda. Only diet soda and we'll probably find out in 40 years or so that diet soda does something awful to our DNA. haha

You have a minor grammatical mistake in the following sentence:

The danger of this diet is that you really shouldn't adapt it in the long term because well, your cholesterol will eventually go through the roof.
It should be in the long run instead of in the long term.

wow, you are fast. You sure about that? Maybe it just needs to be hyphenated?

it's a bot

yes, i see that now. hehe

Great dish. Perfectly cooked and made wirh hardwork perfection and commitment. It looks.so good and delicious. Hope i had one.like this toeat.

This looks very good thxs for the info. but i have one question, how much has this diet made you gain weight

sure you read it? I lost 40 lbs on this diet.

no way you lost weight by drinking beer every day and diet coke.

very light beer. and yes, i did. Weight gain happens at the hands of carbs (my beer has only 3g per bottle). Now that I am lifting weights to gain muscle, i need all that meat and what not.... the beer, is just because i really like beer. :)

Do you wanna know the secret of a good weight losing? Here is the Donty Diet:

  • Don't eat red meat, replace them with grains

  • Drink juices withot sugar or any analog sweetener

  • Drink milk coffee every day, it's a natural purgeant

  • Do not drink soda, these makes you gain more fat than anything else

  • Do not eat fried or chunky foods

  • Do not eat after 18:00

Excellent and delicious post

For me, is better when diets are combined with exercise. It makes shorter the way.

absolutely brother. I exercise now, i just wanted to point out that it isn't necessarily necessary. Of course exercise is important. If you speak to any top trainer they will tell you that weight loss (not cardiovascular health) is 80% diet and 20% exercise. You can run for two hours a day but if you follow it up with a Starbucks oreo ice cream frappaccino and a stack of pancakes, you are still going to gain weight. haha

Really delicious food and the fantastic

I was waiting for another weight loss post from you to ask how it was going! I, too, avoid as much bread as possible. When I go somewhere and get a burger or sandwich, I always ask for no bun. Congrats to you!

When you are in your caloric deficit your organism needs to burn the fat to use it as an emergency energy source and that is the only non-pharmacological way to get thiner. On the other hand if you eat more calories than you need you can build your muscles but also gain fat and it always goes together. That is the mistery standing behind your "diet". You use more energy than you deliver to your body from the food. "The only secret is that you have to keep your carbohydrate intake below 50 grams a day" I'm sorry to say so but it is a lie and not everyone will lose weight feeding themselves the same way you did. How much calories per day you need depends on your weight, height, age and phisical activity, please keep that in mind because burning fat is not actually associated just with the ammount of carbohydrates.
