Today I take you to Antigua

Antigua ist eine Insel in den kleinen Antillen der Karibik. Für mich war diese Insel die Überraschung auf unserer Reise. Hier ein kleiner grober Überblick was es zu der Insel zu erzählen gibt:

Antigua is an island in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean. For me, this island was the surprise on our trip. Here is a small rough overview of what there is to tell about the island:

Entdeckt wurde sie von Christoph Kolumbus der angeblich nicht einen Fuß auf die Insel gesetzt hat (die Insel war nur ein kleiner Zwischenstop auf seiner Reise), über Lord Nelson der während der englischen Kolonialzeit hier Stationiert war und nach diesem wurde die heutige Hafenanlage "Nelson's Dockyard" benannt. Auch Napoleon hat hier seine Spuren hinterlassen.

It was discovered by Christopher Columbus, who allegedly did not set foot on the island (the island was only a short stopover on his journey), about Lord Nelson, who was stationed here during the English colonial era, and after this, the current "Nelson's Dockyard " named. Napoleon also left his mark here.

Zuckerrohrplantagen und Rum Brennereien waren früher auf der ganzen Insel zu finden, die Arbeit auf den Plantagen wurde von Sklaven verrichtet. Auch die Sklaverei auf Antigua hat an manchen Denkmälern ihre Spuren hinterlassen.

Sugar cane plantations and rum distilleries used to be found all over the island, the work on the plantations was done by slaves. Slavery on Antigua has also left its mark on some monuments.

Der Hurrican Irma wollte auch Richtung Antigua ziehen, hat dann jedoch den Kurs gewechselt und somit die Insel nicht zu sehr getroffen. Wer Antigua finanziell unterstützt werde ich hier mal als kleines ? stehen lassen, da es mich selbst etwas verwundert hat. :)

The Hurricane Irma also wanted to move towards Antigua, but then changed course and thus not hit the island too much. Anyone who supports Antigua financially, I will leave here once as a small question, because it has surprised me a little. Below you will find the answer

Über Antigua - About Antigua

Antigua, wie oben beschrieben, ist eine Insel in den kleinen Antillen. Am auffälligsten sind hier die schönen Sandstrände mit ihrem klaren türkisblauem Wasser. Wer hier nicht mindestens den kleinen Zeh ins Wasser hält verpasst etwas. Die Insel hat insgesamt 365 Strände, somit kann man 1 Jahr lang jeden Tag immer einen neuen Strand besuchen ohne die Insel verlassen zu müssen.

Antigua, as described above, is an island in the Lesser Antilles. The most striking here are the beautiful sandy beaches with their clear turquoise water. Who does not keep at least the little toe in the water here missed something. The island has a total of 365 beaches, so you can visit a new beach every day for 1 year without having to leave the island.

Früher wurde hier viel Export betrieben mit Zucker, Baumwolle und Ananas. Die Zuckerrohrplantagen und Baumwolle sind heute nur noch vereinzelt angebaut und nicht mehr im großen Stil. Der Anbau erfolgt nur noch zum Eigenbedarf, Export wird nicht mehr betrieben. Das einzige Einkommen auf der Insel ist der Tourismus.

In the past, a lot of export was done here with sugar, cotton and pineapple. The sugar cane plantations and cotton are now grown only sporadically and not on a large scale. The cultivation is only for personal use, export is no longer operated. The only income on the island is tourism.

Die Inselbewohner in den Dörfern leben in armen Verhältnissen da es sehr wenig Jobs in diesen Regionen gibt, haben manchmal auch sehr wenig bis gar kein Geld für Lebensmittel. Unser Tourguid ist in einem dieser Dörfer aufgewachsen und war dort auch Lebhaft bis er es geschafft hat nach St. John's zu ziehen um dort Arbeit zu finden. Das Leben in den Städten ist besser, man hat mehr Jobs und somit auch mehr Möglichkeiten Geld zu verdienen. Auf unserer Inseltour sind wir auch an seinem Haus, in dem bis heute seine Familie lebt, vorbeigekommen.

The islanders in the villages live in poor conditions because there are very few jobs in these regions, sometimes also have very little to no money for food. Our tour guide grew up in one of these villages and was also alive there until he made it to St. John's to find work there. Life in the cities is better, you have more jobs and thus more opportunities to earn money. On our island tour we passed by his house where his family lives until today.

Sklaverei - slavery

Auf Antigua gab es viele Plantagen somit auch viel Sklaverei. Jedoch waren die Bedingungen in manchen Teilen der Insel sehr hard, womit die Sklaven für sich entschieden Selbstmord zu begehen ganz nach dem Motto "lieber Tot als weiterhin Sklave zu sein".

On Antigua there were many plantations thus also a lot of slavery. However, the conditions in some parts of the island were very hard, with the slaves decided to commit suicide according to the motto "rather dead than continue to be a slave".

Hier kommt die bekannte Devil's Bridge ins Spiel.
This is where the well-known Devil's Bridge comes into play.

Die Devil's Bridge befindet sich im Osten der Insel. Die brechenden Wellen des Atlantiks haben hier eine Bogenförmige Brücke in den Kalkstein geformt, von dieser Brücke haben sich über hundert Sklaven in den Tod gestürzt um ihrem Leben ein Ende zu setzen. Die Brücke ist heute ein Naturdenkmal.
Wenn man davor steht will man sich gar nicht ausmalen wie verzweifelt die Menschen sein mussten um sich hier das Leben zu nehmen. Meiner Ansicht nach musste man viel glück haben direkt zu sterben, ich denke jeder Strick hätte einen schnelleren Tod herbei geführt.

Devil's Bridge is located in the east of the island. The breaking waves of the Atlantic have here formed an arched bridge into the limestone, from this bridge more than one hundred slaves have fallen to their deaths to put an end to their lives. The bridge is today a natural monument.
If you are against it you do not want to imagine how desperate people had to be to take their own lives here. In my opinion, one had to be lucky enough to die directly, I think every rope would have caused a quicker death.

Lord Admiral Horation Nelson

Lord Nelson ist kein Teebeutel, er war ein britischer Admiral der viele beachtliche Seesiege errang. Früher war in dieser Bucht, während der Napoleanischen Kriege, Lord Nelsons Hauptstützpunkt , daher wurde diese nach ihm benannt. Dieser Hafen liegt im Süden Antiguas und gehört zu den Tropensturm-Sicheren Häfen.
Auf der Hafenanlage gibt es viel zu entdecken, alte Kanonen, verschieden große Kugeln, Yachten, Segelschiffe, ein Trockendock und auch die damals gebauten Gebäude mit einem rekonstruiertem Schlafzimmer von Lord Admiral Nelson.

Lord Nelson is not a tea bag, he was a British admiral who won many notable sea victories. Formerly in this bay, during the Napoleonic Wars, was Lord Nelson's main base, so it was named after him. This port is located in the south of Antigua and belongs to the Tropical Storm Safe Harbors.
There is much to discover on the docks, old cannons, different sized bullets, yachts, sailing ships, a dry dock and also the buildings with a reconstructed bedroom by Lord Admiral Nelson.

Investoren von Antigua - Investors of Antigua

Antigua ist nicht die wohlhabenste Insel von allen, große Bauprojekte kann sich die Insel aus eigenen Mitteln nicht leisten. Aber es gibt ja auch Länder die gerne Finanzielle Unterstützung leisten. Erst dachten wir das die meisten Spenden nach großen Stürmen zum wiederaufbau von den USA kommen. Nicht auf Antigua. Antigua hat ein neu gebautes Stadion, Unterkünfte für Evakuierungen bei Stürmen und Hurricans und auch jeder zeit Finanzielle Unterstützung beim Wideraufbau nach Naturkatastrophen von (wer hätte es gedacht) China. China steckt viel Geld in Antigua. Flughafen, Straßen, Gebäude, Schutzeinrichtungen alles Finanziert von China. Woher das Interesse der Chinesen kommt wissen wir nicht, jedoch ist es schön zu sehen wie sie die Insel mit allen Mitteln unterstützen.

Antigua is not the wealthiest island of all, the island can not afford major construction projects from its own resources. But there are also countries that like to provide financial support. First we thought that most of the donations come after big storms to the reconstruction of the USA. Not on Antigua. Antigua has a newly built stadium, accommodations for evacuations during storms and hurricanes, and also anytime financial assistance in rebuilding after natural disasters from (who would have thought it) China. China puts a lot of money in Antigua. Airport, roads, buildings, guards all Financed by China. Where the interest of the Chinese comes from we do not know, but it is nice to see how they support the island by all means.

Eric Claptons Crossroads Center

Tears in heaven Sänger Eric Clapton hat sich auch auf Antigua verewigt. Das Crossroads Center ist ein Rehabilisationscenter für Alkohol- und Drogenabhängige bei Freetown. Wie viel ein Aufenthalt kostet ist mir nicht bekannt, aber wer Interesse hat kann ja gerne bei der Krankenkasse nachfragen ob eine Reha dort möglich wäre, es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall :)

Tears in heaven singer Eric Clapton has immortalized himself on Antigua. The Crossroads Center is a rehabilitation center for alcoholics and drug addicts at Freetown. How much a stay costs is not known to me, but who has interest can indeed like to ask the health insurance if a rehab would be possible there, it is definitely worth it :)

Soviel zu Antigua, atembereaubend schön, überwältigend, viele Geschichten. Definitiv mein Favorit unserer Reise und wir haben uns auch überlegt einmal Urlaub auf dieser Insel zu machen :)

So much for Antigua, breathtakingly beautiful, overwhelming, many stories. Definitely my favorite of our trip and we also considered taking a holiday on this island :)
