Inkscape's absolutely fantastic! Even if you can't draw (like me, for instance) you can still literally "mould" shapes into something interesting. One of my recent entries to a drawing contest was made in Inkscape.

(Its UI is a bit frustrating for someone who's only dealt with raster editors before though).
