Illustration rush. Antistress hugs with tight deadline.

in #design7 years ago

big_hugs_preview.png

Biggest Russian mobile operator ordered me to draw a calendar with twelve detailed illustrations. It was ultimate luck and blessing as well as the biggest ever challenge for me. I had barely no time to rest in 3 long lasting weeks working on this project. But gained such a great skills to come out of stressfull situations easily during such an energy draining and tensed period of my life.

Briefing and references

The story is happening on the street of the comfy city. Architecture is similar to Saint Petersburg, Europe or Odessa (but still should be Russian). In the center of the street we see cute and happy fashioned 30 years old guy. Lot's of people gathered around him with hugs. 25-35 years old women and men. All are stylish, nice and happy. Two panda bears and cats. This scene should be ironic and people should smile looking at it. There are pigeons on the roofs watching this scene...

Sketches

The task was pretty clear, isn't it? I've done some simple sketches and send them.

sketch_01.jpg

We had tight deadline so I had to draw one illustration per day. But for this case it was impossible. To draw detailed crowd with nice background and all the stuff... And they gave me nice feedback.

And then few more comments...

My last sketch after 5 iterations was approved finally and I've started to work in colors.

Coloring

I have not even finished filling simple silouettes but they've already asked me how it's going? Show us what you have immideately!

coloring_01.jpg

Okay, continue coloring but you should draw much faster. Faster!!!

coloring_02.jpg

Even faster, you bastard!

coloring_03.jpg

Here is the comments. You should apply them in 15 minutes. We are waiting. Do you understand?

corrections03.jpg

Don't forget to add the shadows under the trees.

corrections04.jpg

Finished? No. Here you are, more comments.

corrections05.jpg

And a little bit more. But in 5 minutes we are waiting for the final.

Final

Great to had all these corrections actually. After their comments overall illustration look was getting better and better. And fun that they thought that if they will talk with me like with a pig work would improve and become faster :)

I wish I had more time on this work. Now I want to change everything here...

Interesting, what particularly do you learn from this post? 😂

excellent work!! :)

Thanks!

There are times when I am thankful that I didn’t end up pursuing a full time career in art. Reading about crazy deadlines like this is one of those times. I’m glad you were able to give the client what they wanted within such a tight deadline. Great work!

Thanks a lot! Yes, there are some benefits on full time work. But fortunately for me freelancing is much better. E.g. this project gave me a chance to do nothing for the whole year if I want. So it was worth it.

I had an experience working at office as a graphic designer and illustrator for two years. Salary was too low. Maybe because I worked in a small Far Eastern city Khabarovsk. I don't know...

As far as office work in graphic design goes, it's not much better here in the US. The market is saturated with Graphic Designers, many of which are so eager to get into the field that they'll undercut themselves during salary negotiations. It ends up dragging the whole market value down.

So, a lot of my fellow college classmates have found full-time work in the field, but, from what I have gathered, are not making enough to really live comfortably or really start paying off their loans. I'd say about 1/10 that find full-time work in design are making a good wage.

Now that you mention that this assignment made you enough income to have the option of taking a lot of time off, the intense deadline doesn't seem so bad :). The small number of freelance gigs I did felt like pulling teeth to get paid, and I always managed to undervalue the work :(.

Regardless, I'm always happy to see other illustrators out there making it the world. Thanks again for sharing all you work and the process/story behind each piece.

Oh yeah, I was not thinking about the prices for basic living needs in US comparing to Far Eastern villages in Russia so I guess even if the salaries might be much higher in your country then anyway it may be not enough for living there...

Thanks a lot for your sharing, this is really interesting!

The usual great stuff !! :-)
I wish you would join my new contest, i would love to see YOUR cat in hat! It would rock on Steemit Fil !! :-D

Thank you, Agnes! I would be glad to, but I have almost no time for the contests anymore...

Gratz on this clear success, keeping tight with deadline and getting these great works.. They are lucky to work with you.
As a smallest Turkish individual i'm gonna order an avatar when you have time :))

Thank you :) I may find some time in the end of Januray for the avatar. If you'll find a budget for that :)

hodling on to that ;)

Wow, what a stressful process, but you handled it perfectly! Sometimes the clients don't understand the value of time. Looks great though! Like always... :) Helen

Thanks a lot, Helen. Well, in this case I suppose that customer overvalued the time :)

I would fire the customer.

Haha :) they just bought me with all the inner organs... How do you say that? I mean they totally payed for each bad word even.

Just discovered your artworks my man! Such an original style I must say!

I was also thinking that we should bring Steemit artists together and stick as a group. Maybe we can do some Discord chat dedicated to it!

If you want, drop me a message! My nic is Anritco (Nic Morales)#7809

Hey Nic! I've just registered there because these days few people mentioned Discord as an app popular on Steemit. Actually I've never heard about it before and it looks a bit complicated for me now. Tried to add you there and hope it was successful :P

By the way in my other post guys invited me to some sort of good quality art discord chat channel, haha.

I prefer Telegram but looks like it is not popular here...

Great !!!👍🏻👍🏻I like you explan, very very very good work
