Being dead doesn't necessarily mean being physically gone in the world.
A person can be dead on the inside, drowned by an intense amount of sadness and emptiness. It's usually caused by a series of unfortunate events that piled up and grew bigger until it becomes uncontrollable and unbearable. It's the feeling of being in the dark while learning to embrace it and find solace in it until darkness becomes a part of your system. There are different definitions of the word depression but that's how I see it.
Depression is a serious disease.
A deadly one. It makes you forget about all the good things you have in life. It makes you forget to be thankful for the little blessings you receive. When you're depressed, you don't look forward for another day anymore. Each day becomes a torture, a burden you have to endure. It makes you focus on the bad side until you pity yourself.
One of the worst effect of depression is suicide.
It has been a serious issue eversince. Most people think that committing suicide is a selfish act. It's a mortal sin because only God knows when to end your life. Your life is a borrowed one. He gave it to you for a purpose and it's not your decision to end it. It's easy to judge people who committed suicide but if you look deeper, they went through hard times which led them to that horrible decision. There is a big reason for wanting to kill yourself no matter how invalid or shallow other thinks it is.
Suicide was never right and it will never be right. It's not a solution to your problem.
But it's not easy to think that way when an overwhelming amount of sadness is drowning you. That's why we really need to help those depressed people. Depression has no face. Just because a person is smiling and laughing doesn't necessarily imply that he's happy. You might know someone who looks positive despite all the struggles he's been facing but that doesn't mean that he's not affected. Most depressed people are good at keeping their masks intact. You won't see them weeping in public. They try to act and talk normally as if there's no internal battle going inside their mind. But when they're alone, that's when darkness attacks them until they decide to succumb to depression.
There's really no easy way to identify if a person is depression or not. So, how can we help them if they don't open up to us? Simple. Always be there for the people around you who needs help. When you see a friend going through hard times, try to extend a helping hand. When someone you know looks sad, talk to them, listen and give comforting and encouraging words. Or sometimes, simply lending an ear to their sentiments is a big help already. No matter how small a problem your friend is going through, still, be there for him. Make him feel that he's not alone, that someone truly cares for him and will never leave his side. Always give him a genuine smie, invite him out, make him feel important. Most of all, make him see the beauty of life.
Depression is a serious battle that's faced by a lot of people.
It's a bit comforting to know that a lot of people are already aware about it because of how the media gave an ample amount of attention regarding this issue. People needs to know that depression is not just an unnecessary emotion caused by overthinking or whatsoever. It's a serious case that can increase the suicide rate when it gets out of hand.
We should do something by helping one another. No one should feel alone. We can't let the monster called "depression" defeat the people that matters to us.

Everyone is born instinctively depressed as we inherit all of the emotions and worries our parents experienced.
Somehow developing countries experience lower levels of depression.

Nice read. Depression is indeed a silent killer. An article like this is one helpful way to somehow educate the majority on how to deal with such serious matter.

That's really true. Depression has no face, you really can't tell if someone's suffering from it or not.
There is no immediate solution as causes of it may vary, some may be innate, some may be from traumas of some sort. The best way to help those in need is to just be kind to everyone, because truth be told, no matter how much we wanna help, there will really be times when we might end up not being there for others all the time.
Well written. Great post. In my opinion, depression is the result of bad things building up over the time, but the main reason is our emotional response to those things. And that is something that comes from the roots (family). If the family is dysfunctional in some way, that influences our view of reality and our experiences. Being sad and being depressed is really different. You explained very well how being depressed looks like. And I definitely agree that we should help each other. Very empathetic and heartwarming post.
agree!

Clinical depression is medicalized misery. Read the essay and book The Myth of Mental Illness by psychiatrist Thomas Szasz.
Life has not always been a bed of rose, something must keep one going, I recollect the story of a footballer who lost all his wealth to his wife, the guy committed suicide at the end, people were willing to help him but he lost hope and faith in himself, life is not easy, but with faith and a great attitude one can overcome all situations .
This is one of the first posts I read and I think it's very successful ... thank you for taking the time to give your opinion on such a sensitive topic.
really, really good
and DEPRESSION has no face..
Not to make light; but, hypothetically I think J.O.Y. is a helpful remedy:
Put (J)esus first in your life...walk with Him...talk with Him about everything!
Make (O)thers second...find someone with a need, and help them...pick your niche...helping youth, the elderly, etc...
Take the focus from (Y)ourself, and choose to see the many blessings your life holds, even if you have to dig deep to find them. While putting yourself last, remember to eat healthy and get plenty of rest and exercise. If you are on meds for the big D, seek help weaning yourself from them as you feel progressively better.
Peace.
I'm new to the community and my first post was about depression also (in fact we just have about almost the same title). This is a really good article and as someone who has personally experienced suicidal thoughts and attempts - this is is spot on. Looking forward to your future posts :)
jus osama post
Depression can be avoided by simple ways by connecting more with nature, by living a simpler life, by spending more time with our loved ones.
Atleast the good thing about today is that people do recognise depression as a serious disorder. 20 years ago when I underwent through a depression cycle and got kept entertaining thoughts of suicide and shit like that (something I find horrifying today), people around me couldn't even realise what was wrong. Luckily a complete change of environment, and education institution and people, more of a stroke of luck changed things around for me. Not everybody is that lucky.
Clinical depression is serious and people need to realise this and recognise symptoms of those around them who exhibit such tendences and get them help before it is too late.
Yes fighting depression is no joke at all. It is difficult to fight our own self on how to control it. The emotion has overpowerd the mind. Coping with it needs a lot of moral support not only from our loved ones, specifically from family members, also from friends, and colleagues. Also the environment, it is also one of the factors to help fighting depression. Thank you for sharing it. Someone may need this article now.
That a wonderful post, although some might think there's are some other serious silent killer's of the body out there, but it is in the top three.
You are absolutely right.
This is the real problem: "There's really no easy way to identify if a person is depression or not."
Thanks for sharing.
This is a great post @jassenessaj. A major cause depression is constant comparing other people life with yours. Looking at what other people have that you don't have but you desire. An effective way to prevent depression is been happy and content with your progress, having a plan and focusing on achieving it.
raelly good post
There is no doubt at all. Depression is indeed a kind of trouble that can be seriously dreadful and something that you just need to be very careful about. I have seen people suffer through it, I don’t have EXACT solution but this article http://www.blackburndistributions.com/blog/supplements-fatigue-stress-tiredness/ will definitely help up.
