Doug Jones’s election in Alabama could help kill the Republican reverse-Robin-Hood tax bill if:
It sends a signal to at least 2 wavering Republican senators of just how unpopular Trump and the Republicans are among voters back home -- prompting them to join Jeff Flake in voting against the final version of the bill.
McConnell can’t get the final bill through the Senate before Christmas and the end of the session, after which point Jones takes his seat and reduces McConnell’s majority to just 51 votes. At that point, all that’s needed besides Flake is 1 Republican with enough integrity to vote against the bill.
At least 3 Republican senators agree with Democrats who are now demanding that Republicans “hit pause” on the tax bill -- delaying a vote until Jones is sworn in so that the voters of Alabama are fully represented. Then see #2 above.
