It's Daffodil Time !

in #daffodil6 years ago

Daffodils are one of the many great flowering Spring Bulbs, but probably the best known - other than the Tulips of course ! Daffodils Flower in late winter and spring, and there are many colours and varieties available. Plant them in full sun or semi-shade in garden beds or pots. Cool to temperate climates will suit them best. Make sure you plant the bulbs in a well-drained soil and a little fertiliser or mulch , and they will reward you with a wonderful display of flowers year after year. Daffodil bulbs can be bought from your local garden centre or supermarket while the plants are dormant in late summer and Autumn. I took these photos at a Sydney Garden.

Daffodils are one of the easiest to grow and most popular spring flowering bulbs. If you think you know all about daffodils, consider that there are over 50 species and, according to the National Daffodil Society (NDS), there are "...over 25,000 registered cultivars (named hybrids) divided among the thirteen divisions of the official classification system." There's more to daffodils than the pretty yellow trumpet flowers that cheer up the spring landscape.

There's no data on how long a daffodil plant can live, but a stand of daffodil bulbs can easily out-live the person who plants them. You can often tell where a house foundation used to be because of the outline provided by the daffodils that were planted around it.

There's been a lot of confusion about whether all Narcissus were daffodils, but the NDS has put the matter to rest by saying the terms are synonymous. The botanical name, Narcissus, should be used for scientific writing and daffodil everywhere else. So daffodil it is.

I heard about this flower, but never see it! Actually it's beautiful, I could see pure Yellow color there! Amazing and yeah a good suited flower to the garden! Nice photography and yeah they are very stunning!@ctrl-alt-nwo,

Cheers~

It's hard for me to add anything to those wonderful comments that already exist. But, it pleases that there are flowers that are well known all over the world. This is a common and understandable topic for people from different countries and different nationalities. Narcis, this is a testimony. Beautiful flowers and photos. It feels like spring has returned. In our region, these flowers have already faded, a few months ago. It is no longer possible to see on the streets grandmothers who sell these flowers. Cultivation of these unpretentious flowers on their land is a good help, addition to the small pension that elderly people receive.

Dare to go daffodil! From classic to quirky, daffodils are a fail-safe way to cheer up any garden. Order bulbs early for the best selection, plant in the fall and enjoy the flowers for many springs to come. To get you started, here are some of our favorite daffodil bulbs. You may be surprised how many heights, colors, and shapes that daffodils come in.

You may also be surprised by how many different names these spring beauties go by: daffodil (of course), narcissus, and jonquil. Daffodil is the common name given to the plants by English-speaking people. Narcissus is the group’s botanical name, which many gardeners now use as its common name, too. And jonquils are a specific type of narcissus (Narcissus jonquilla), including popular varieties such as Baby Moon, Beautiful Eyes, Lemon Sailboat, Martinette and Pipit. Jonquils usually have one to three small fragrant flowers per stem with more cylindrical pointed leaves.

How nice! Good old daffodils! These are comfort flowers for me during my college days in England. Loved to walk in the parks in spring just to see these gentle yellow daffodils! Very nostalgic indeed.

Daffodil and brilliant photo clicks. I remember some of singer sung song of my country about Daffodil's flower compare some of beauty lady.Hi @ctrl-alt-nwo, That would be great information about

image.png

Daffodil, (Narcissus pseudonarcissus), also called common daffodil or trumpet narcissus, bulb-forming plant in the amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae), widely cultivated for its trumpetlike flowers. Daffodils are native to northern Europe and are grown in temperate climates around the world. The daffodil’s popularity has resulted in the production of many varieties; in addition to the classic yellow form, the trumpet and petals may themselves be of contrasting yellow, white, pink, or orange.

image.png

image.png

The daffodil is a perennial and grows to about 41 cm (16 inches) in height. Each plant features five or six linear leaves that grow from the bulb and are about 30 cm (12 inches) long. The stem bears one large yellow blossom with a corolla deeply cleft into six lobes and a central bell-shaped crown, or corona, that is frilled at its edges. This trumpet shape contains the stamens and is the flower’s most conspicuous feature.

Daffodils do have a beautiful flower, as you can see from the picture below:

Source
The flower is the yellow parts of the plant. Daffodils grow from bulbs - after the flowers have died away (and started to produce seed pods), gardeners let the leaves carry on growing and collecting nutrition which they send back down to the bulb. Eventually, the leaves die off and it looks as if the whole plant has disappeared totatlly.

However, the bulb is still working hard underground, ready to grow another daffodil flower the following year. Daffodils also propogate by producing more tiny bulbs around the original parent bulb. These only grow leaves for the first few years and eventually, when the new bulb is big enough, it will produce a flower.

The bright yellow blooms of daffodils are a wonderful sign that spring has arrived. Here’s how to plant daffodil bulbs and grow daffodil flowers in your garden!Daffodils are hardy and easy perennials to grow in most regions of North America, except Southern Florida. Daffodils are a fall-planted bulb, so plant them in autumn and they will bloom in late winter or early spring.

The traditional daffodil flower may be a showy yellow or white, with six petals and a trumpet-shape central corona, but many variations exists today. Leafless stems bear between 1 and 20 flowers; sometimes the flowers need to be staked so that they don’t weigh down the stems.

Daffodils are suitable for planting between shrubs or in a border, or for forcing blooms indoors. They also look wonderful in a woodland garden and in large groves. You’ll find that many gardeners plant the bulbs not just by the dozens but by the hundreds! Daffodil flowers also make for great cut flowers.

Planting

Plant daffodil bulbs in the fall—about 2 to 4 weeks before the ground freezes. See local frost dates and get more tips on planting fall bulbs.
Select a site that offers full sun or partial shade.
Most daffodils tolerate a range of soils but grow best in moderately fertile, well-drained soil that is kept moist during the growing season.
Many of the popular species prefer neutral to acidic soils, but some prefer slightly alkaline soils, so consult your local nursery to see which is best for your daffodil variety.
Select high-quality daffodil bulbs that have not dried out. The larger the bulb, the better.
Plant bulbs 1to 5 times their own depth. Where winters are severe, make sure there are at least 3 inches of soil covering the bulb.
Daffodils will tolerate some crowding, but they prefer to be spaced 3 to 6 inches apart.

Sunny, spring daffodils are the most perennial flower bulbs you can plant

The Gardener's Golden Investment: nothing adds more to your spring garden than Daffodils! Because they're perennial, deer resistant, easy to grow, and magnificently beautiful, they're a true favorite in spring garden. Daffodil flower bulbs all bloom beautifully the first spring, and then give you more flowers each year.

And whether you plant them in formal flowering bulb beds or naturalize them in woodland or wildflower gardens, once they're planted, you do nothing. And they lead the floral parade every spring. Call them daffodils, narcissus or jonquils, but plant them and enjoy!

Daffodils, the flowers symbolizing friendship, are some of the most popular flowers exclusively due to their unmatched beauty. Daffodils belong to the genus Narcissus. Daffodil flowers have a trumpet-shaped structure set against a star-shaped background.

Often the trumpet is in a contrasting color from the background. The name Daffodils includes the cluster-flowered yellow Jonquils and the White Narcissi , as well as the include as the more common trumpet shaped flowers (right), members of the genus Narcissus.

Daffodils are constantly recurring flowers with at least 50 species and many hybrids. Where climate is moderate, Daffodils flourish among the first spring buds. Daffodils often bloom in clusters.

Daffodils are native mainly to the Mediterranean region, in particular to the Iberian Peninsula, as well as Northern Africa and the Middle East.

In addition to the species, the Daffodil Data Bank lists over 13,000 hybrids. Generally Daffodils are yellow, and range from yellow-and-white, yellow-and-orange, white-and-orange, pink, and lime-green.

All Daffodils have a corona in the center that looks like a trumpet and a ring of petals all around. The natural Daffodil is colored golden yellow all over while the trumpet may often appear in a contrasting color.

The paper-white Daffodils could be planted in gardens that are outdoors. But they could also grow in indoor gardens during Christmas.

Miniature Daffodils

Daffodils come in all sizes, from 5-inch blooms on 2-foot stems to half-inch flowers on 2-inch stems. Largely for show purposes or for guidance in gardening, certain species and named cultivars have been determined by the American Daffodil Society to be miniatures and must compete by themselves in Daffodil shows.

Each daffodil is a narcissist, but not every narcissus is a daffodil.

Beautiful spring flowers illuminate and cheer up every garden. Sometimes they also have a sweet fragrance.

I love these subtle and very romantic inflorescences.

Have a fantastic day, full of beautiful flowers my friend :)

Yes, i love the fragrance of Jonquils.

Growing Daffodils
Daffodils grow perennially from bulbs. In temperate climates they flower among the earliest blooms in spring. Daffodils often grow in large clusters, covering lawns and even entire hillsides with yellow.

Depth, as a general rule, needs to be thrice the height. This means large bulbs should have a depth of 6 to 8 inches, a medium size 3-6 inches and a smaller size 2-3 inches. Always remember that the load of soil proves helpful in protecting the bulbs from breaking too easily and in keeping them upright for a longer duration.

If this fact is ignored and enough depth is not given, the Daffodil will bend down very soon. Though Daffodil blooms will come in bigger clumps, the bulbs and flowers will be scant.

Narcissus is a genus of predominantly spring perennial plants of the Amaryllidaceae (amaryllis) family. Various common names including daffodil,] daffadowndilly, narcissus, and jonquil are used to describe all or some members of the genus. Narcissus has conspicuous flowers with six petal-like tepals surmounted by a cup- or trumpet-shaped corona. The flowers are generally white or yellow (also orange or pink in garden varieties), with either uniform or contrasting coloured tepals and corona.

Narcissus were well known in ancient civilisation, both medicinally and botanically, but formally described by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum (1753). The genus is generally considered to have about ten sections with approximately 50 species. The number of species has varied, depending on how they are classified, due to similarity between species and hybridization. The genus arose some time in the Late Oligocene to Early Miocene epochs, in the Iberian peninsula and adjacent areas of southwest Europe. The exact origin of the name Narcissus is unknown, but it is often linked to a Greek word for intoxicated (narcotic) and the myth of the youth of that name who fell in love with his own reflection. The English word "daffodil" appears to be derived from "asphodel", with which it was commonly compared.

The species are native to meadows and woods in southern Europe and North Africa with a center of diversity in the Western Mediterranean, particularly the Iberian peninsula. Both wild and cultivated plants have naturalised widely, and were introduced into the Far East prior to the tenth century. Narcissi tend to be long-lived bulbs, which propagate by division, but are also insect-pollinated. Known pests, diseases and disorders include viruses, fungi, the larvae of flies, mites and nematodes. Some Narcissus species have become extinct, while others are threatened by increasing urbanisation and tourism.

Narcissus is the Latin name for a gathering of solid, generally spring-blossoming, globules. There are a few Narcissus animal categories that blossom in the fall. Daffodil is the basic English name for all narcissus. The botanic name of the family is Narcissus. They are for the most part local to the Mediterranean area, yet a couple of animal groups are found through Central Asia to China. The scope of structures in development has been intensely altered and reached out, with new varieties accessible in nurseries for all intents and purposes each year.

The name Narcissus is gotten from that of the narcissistic youth of Greek folklore, Narkissos. However "Narcissi" is once in a while given in word references as the linguistically adjust plural of "Narcissus", The American Daffodil Society favors the utilization of "narcissus" for both particular and plural. The Webster's Third New International Dictionary gives "narcissus", "narcissuses" and in conclusion "narcissi" as plural structures.

The name Daffodil is gotten from a before "affodell", a variation of asphodel. The explanation behind the presentation of the underlying "d" isn't known, despite the fact that a likely source is an etymological converging from the Dutch article "de," as in "de affodil". From in any event the sixteenth century "Daffadown Dilly" or "daffadowndilly" has showed up as an energetic equivalent word of the name.

Narcissus are once in a while called jonquils in North America, however entirely that name has a place just with the surge leaved Narcissus jonquilla and cultivars got from it.

Paperwhites allude to the species Narcissus papyraceus.

Wow amazing & beautiful great Daffodil flowers plant .

For your post propagation.

These are a hardy perennial that if planted correctly should come back year after year. They are a wonderful addition to any spring garden and add a beautiful yellow colour that brightens up any spot they are placed in. They make wonderful cut flowers too, so they can brighten up both the inside and the outside of your home!

Daffodil bulbs are usually sown from September to November, but a good rule of thumb is to just have them planted two to four weeks before the first frost sets in.

Daffodils do best when planted in areas that get a lot of sunshine, preferably all day long, but definitely not anywhere that gets less than 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It is not recommended to plant them in shaded areas as they will not flower well. As with most bulbs, well drained soil is best, so avoid areas of the garden that are prone to flooding.

We have a very good habit of narcissus, the climate is very suitable. They also come to life in the spring. It is impossible to imagine a spring garden without blooming tender daffodils. The flowering of these sunny, bright yellow and dazzling white colors marks the arrival of spring. Their grace and delicate charming aroma have long won the hearts of connoisseurs and lovers of natural beauty. After all, it's not for nothing that in ancient times people sang this fragile beautiful flower, considering it a love talisman. Many peoples of the world have many rites, holidays and ceremonies with narcissus.

Beautiful photos, and excellent communication. In childhood, these flowers were associated with me with the onset of spring, Easter. Mom always planted them along the curb and when spring came, the first to open daffodils, and later the tulips blossomed. We always grew daffodils white with a yellow center, but in fact they can be other colors. Belongs to such a noble flower to the family of Amaryllis, refers to perennial onion plants.

Daffodils belong to the genus narcissus, which includes jonquils and paperwhites. While people in some regions refer to large, yellow narcissus as daffodils and the smaller, paler versions as jonquils, they all belong to the genus narcissus and carry the common name of daffodil. It gains its name from the Greek god narcissus. According to legend, Narcissus was so enamored with his own reflection in the river that he drowned trying to capture his reflection. The daffodils growing along stream banks soon became associated with Narcissus and took on his name, probably due to the beauty of their reflected image in the water.

Daffodils are native mainly to the Mediterranean region, in particular to the Iberian Peninsula, as well as Northern Africa and the Middle East.
