That view indicator should definitely be worth something. I create content that stands the test of time and draws outside users to steemit in order to see it.
Opening the article, that's your first vote. That should start the reward process. An upvote then adds to the rewards. An upvote without the opening vote should be worth a heck of a lot less to the curator, but not penalize the author. I'm commenting now, once I press post that should add a bit more to the rewards for the author. 3 steps, highest reward becomes available to both the author and curator.
Time is hard is hard one. Sometimes I'll write a quick joke that depends on images I've created and I feel the value should not be penalized because it only took the reader 2 minutes to be entertained vs 10. It takes a person a second or two to view the image. It could take me a few hours to produce...and I'm not talking about memes.
I'm glad you wrote this. 400 votes, $80.00, 30 views.....that looks really bad. Favoritism at it's finest. Others. 60 votes, $3.00, 45 views...
New users aren't stupid. The top example seems fishy to the untrained eye.
Thank you very much for your detailed reply @nonameslefttouse!
Well that´s exactly the idea - a gradational voting chain with different levels of rewards.
I think we all do have 'untrained eyes' in that sense. Have you ever seen a total of views of one of your facebook posts? There is a reason why you didn´t. I actually don´t think it was a good idea to implement it here at an early stage. But well, now it´s online and we have to deal with this uncomfortable truth...
I see views on youtube videos, works well for them. I say we should be taking a few pages out of their book. The views mean a lot! The likes mean a little more. There's no need for a downvote, one can simply walk away. We should also have a subscribe style button and the number of subscribers along side the voting area to encourage others to follow by making it simple. This adds to future rewards. Can't always be thinking about right now.
I view my blog more as a multimedia style showcase. I can combine video, words, images into one grand presentation. This is where I'm headed. It doesn't have to be about words and a topic with a few flashy images to catch the eye. I won't go all out though until there's a balanced system. I can't depend on robots when I'm working to create something for an actual viewer.
As for the view indication now, I'm very happy with it because I've discovered some of my old stuff is starting to circulate. This attracts people to my account here, as well as steemit in general. I'm drawing people, so I feel I should be rewarded. Even a year from now, if something I did draws someone to steemit, I should see a tiny little payment. If that person signs up, I should see a larger little payment. In 5 years, with my thousands of articles circulating, I should be able to make a living from that revenue alone. A 24 hour lifespan is a waste of talent.
I am actually a huge fan of the 'right now'. It´s like in real life - the presence is worth much more than the past :) However curation will be designed in 5 years, we should make sure that people get nicely rewarded along the way.
To have a future, I need the lessons from my past, right now.
:)
Well I couldn´t agree more, we are the sum of our experiences. That´s true. So now we came to the philosophical part of the story.... :-D
