It looks like you didn't capture a large enough share of the rewards to be able to see a measurable return. Lots of factors weigh into this, steem power, timing and the weight of other voters on the post for example.
My post was an extreme example of a high power vote with good timing, not the average
so i'm pretty much useless to help people atm?

Not worthless, every little bit helps and votes will be appreciated but it just takes a while before it becomes profitable for the curator unless you make great picks every time..

I'm only voting manually. I watch a lot of other curators votes and specific tags using steemviz/steemwatch/steemdb + browse obsessively + people pass me links to good posts they find.

You do great work on steemit and a lot of people admire your work here, including me :) Do you think its wise for me to wait until my SP goes up to do more curating? Authoring is fine. I curated for two weeks and it was very low I figured it was because of my SP :/ Are you going to submit into the video montage project that winstonwolfe is doing? I am. The most redeeming and inspiring thing that has kept me on Steem was seeing the charity that post brought. It means steem can be a force for goodness in this world and provide opportunities that weren't there before. Very proud of that and I tell people I know about that story.

Although I am a cynic at times, charity should be verified before pooling $10,000 +. Steemit is full of good and bad. It's a reflection of he real world around us. We have to be careful in the future of scammers pretending. This is in no way denying what happened to that gentleman. It's just someone will get the idea to pretend to be sick. It' goes on in this world all the time. No different here.
Absolutely on POINT! I have thought for a second, I wonder if I should finish this post about how I went to a protest, and got interviews, not covered in the news anywhere (and spent and lost money to do so) or whether I should just make a post about how my son broke his leg. Not to trivialize any tragedy but I think sometimes, in fact I know, people are doing exactly that to propel themselves up and to me its all about morals. I won't do it because it isnt my nature but its also in my nature to Resteem posts about tragedy and loss and try to help and give people the benefit of the doubt. But honestly if thats what people want to do just make a link to your gofundme. STEEMIT should be a place for creating content the internet needs and wants and not about raising funds. Its just too easy for people to scam others and there are tons of ways to do it. I hate feeling this cynical...it isn't natural but man, writing my first "successful post" ($42) and then watching it go to only $37 was a real kick in the motivation-to-create-content pants. Almost made me tap out and spend the money on some Radeon GPU's 😢
True, @darthnava was a trusted member for a long time before this happened so theres no doubt in my mind in this case. We get scammers every day, you should have seen it during the last major bubble with ~15k+ posts everywhere the scammers really came out of the woodwork then :P
I heard it was more chaotic in the beginning days. Glad I joined a year later so it's cleaned up. a little. Met some early adopters when th their 800 bot accounts. Not cool.

I couldn't agree more. It's nice to see whales are incentified for finding really good content. I honestly think it's great to see people like you, if not, new minnows who have genuinely great ideas will sink to the bottom and they will go away on life to other things. For anyone reading, more curation rewards are earned with the more SP you're voting with. This is one of the reasons to power up and hold your STEEM Power.

Curation rewards pay out at the same time as the posts do, after 7 days. At first, when you have limited Steem Power its much harder to earn curation rewards because you get a smaller share of the rewards so you need to make the right votes for max efficiency.

And will never, ever, happen to me no matter what I post! Now I am just dedicating my time to replying and posting here and there and otherwise getting in on all the posts about how to make it from a 🐟 to a 🐬. $17k...that is ridiculous money right there. $500 is insane to me. My first $40 post last week is now below $40 which means some assholes flagged it which is such a dick move. If people aren't careful there are going to be a lot of people cashing out and this will be a community of whales cut in half and minnows with no one able to make anything more than a few dollars because people wont Upvote or Resteem posts make with 100% effort. I make quite a bit per hour working my job so this isn't going to break me or make me but it might discourage me from making content and a lot of other people too. And to halt the progress of a STEEMIAN who joined last September and who has over 500 posts and has bought into STEEMIT with BTC and USD would be a mistake for the community and will ultimately destroy the value of STEEM. I think there are a lot of great people here on steemit that really try to help others out but dont realize that beyond tips and contests the best thing you can do is encourage people by UPVOTING and RESTEEMING their posts. A RESTEEM from a popular dolphin or whale can make someone "Level Up" and it hardly ever happens. Not in the way it should be. There are cryptos worth WAY more that simply traded electricity for coins and this takes a lot more to make your way from nothing to something. My Litecoin operation was way more profitable for way less time and effort. I have seen popular people post the weakest stuff and make bank just because everyone is kissing their asses trying to get a mention (which is sad) and others who have a low reputation make great posts and get nearly nothing and it really upsets me. Not because I am not rich off STEEM and making money just because people know my name but because I dont think influencial people are taking time to read posts, they simply create them and dont interact as much as they should. STEEM could be so much more than it is right now and I just think we are at a real danger of losing a lot of people who have spent so much time to earn virtually nothing, literally, as others buy cars, homes and boats. God bless those folks, I Upvote them every day (without reciprocity) but there needs to be a different way to get people who create content to be seen by more people and there needs to be more whales who interact and not just sit back and invest, but I suppose that can not be changed. Ok I am done bitching, and yeah I am just mad because I don't make squat. It sucks and it feels like I would be better off working some overtime and spending time doing other things. And that thought, if felt by enough people, would destroy this entire Steemit experiment (its in beta after all). That would be a real shame. Other cryptos are already offering more community options so we need to offer something to users, especially since we have barely 200k, and even less that are active content creators. We need to start motivating 🐋, 🐳 and 🐬'S to help Minnows, bringing them into full-time STEEMIT creators and make it worth it to do so, so when you Google something or Bing it a Steemit link comes up and not Facebook or Twitter. I am not teying to be negative I can just see a weakness that could prove to tank the value of the entire operation.
