Why Grave Yards in Mountain in Korea ?

in #culture7 years ago

Usually Grave Yard is located in mountain in Korea.
Cemeteries and tombs seemed to be located on the flat area in other countries.
But in Korea to make tomb in the moutain was a kinds of essential duty of descendants. I don't know the reason why, but I could estimate the cause.
Koreans have thought that the place of ancestor's tomb could effect the fate of the descendants. More over koreans have believed that there existed good and bade energy in the mountain. So descendants had been trying best place for tomb of their parents. Even there was story the presidential candidates moved their parents tomb for better place. It is a kinds of superstition. But it have affected to people very strongly.

Here I 'd like show you some grave yard where is located in the mountain.

I took the photos near my office

These photos from Chuncheon

The photos of below are near my house

Why mountain? We korean have taken it into granted to make tombs in the mountain. May be nobody have tried to find out the reason.
In my opinion this custom was deeply related to korean traditional religion.
In korean traditional religion, the mountain god has the second important god. The first is the Heaven God, the second god is the Mountain God, the third is the Ancestral god, and so on.
The mountain had been supposed as sacred place for early koreans even until now. I had posted several time there was a shrine for the mountain god in Buddhist Temple. The mountain god was always followed by Tiger.

Great job! You made great frames! I'm excited!
Have a nice day @slowwalker !

interesting post

Do not the Chinese people have the same tradition? I saw all the Chinese people burial here, in Aceh, on a hill, or in a high place. I think all of that, indeed, is because it comes from the same religious teachings. But interestingly, this tradition in some places is also followed by people outside that religious teachings. Even they deliberately create artificial hills or high mounds for burials.

Very interesting post! I love to read about korean culture and see impressions of the country. Thanks for sharing :)

Nice views! I love this kind of cultural articles. I'm super interested in Korean culture (both traditional and k-pop). Keep steeming!

Thank you So much

mountain spirits oversee the graves of the dead - so beautiful to be watched over by a mountain goddess.

The grave markers are nestled among rolling grassy hills and surrounded by shady trees....a lovely setting, close to the heavens and to the gods.

It is an act of respect to honour and seek protection for the dead.

These sacred groves offer peace and beauty to the living visitors who come to visit dead loved ones.

Your photographs are beautiful and touching, @slowwalker...such respect.

Thank you as always

you're welcome, my friend :)

Beautiful nature @slowwalker thank you very much for sharing

Great picture @slowwalker, You always give the posting about the culture that exists in your area, and it was very interesting in my opinion. because not all people are very savvy about the culture in their own residences. Thank you for share this post. ;)

Thank you for your compliment

In Romania Grave Yards tend to me much happier even if it is not normal. We have I think the happiest and the most colored grave yard in Europe. Just check this out.

I have never been to Korea before. While seeing those beautiful pics and reading this article it seems to be a nice country. The culture there seems to be fascinating and i like old temples.

You are right.
Old temple is excellent

@slowwalker personally I like it the lotus pond is an important feature in the Korean garden. If there is a natural stream, often a pavilion is built next to it, allowing the pleasure of watching the water. Terraced flower beds are a common feature in traditional Korean gardens.

That's right hahaha

korea is such a beautiful place

Every place has its beauty in my guess

Every culture is unique in their own way, this was really fascinating to me since I'd never seen such a wonder before , it really makes you question and want to find out more about their culture @slowwalker I have many Korean friends here in NYC I'm going to ask them :) cheers

Visit korea with them.
You will really like it

I'd love to !

Thank you for giving information about the tomb on the mountain, hopefully no rain that causes the tomb marks do not look the same so that close relatives can be pilgrimage without bothering.

The history and culture of the cemeteries has always fascinated me. I always go to visit "the city of the dead". Thanks so for showing a Korean cemetery. I was thinking of writing a post on the cemeteries of my city ... Thank you again @slowwalker

@slowwalker that's another culture I learnt today in the history of Koreans. That's cool. I love the images.

Did not know, thanks for the post!

Very beautiful scenery thanx for sharing

I believe so it's a little closer to the heavens. Also it seems like it was suppose to be plotted out properly but was never finished. Also they could have planned to have more up there but was then they stopped burying people up there.

Do you know if they still currently use that as a plot site?

i like this

I haven't seen them before. They look different comparing how they are made in our country hmm...

To be honest, you have such a quaint and serene graveyards there.
Here in our country, the graveyards are so clogged up, it's a sad situation.
You give utmost respect to your departed ones, i salute you.

That would be a great place for a picnic, and im sure the full time residents wont complain. Look at the views :) Just WOW

It is a sad story. I 'm so sorry.

We lack the place coz our country has a small land area. But our memories of the departed will remain forever.

Hola! Hermosas fotografías.

I just saw that there is a cemetery on the mountain, and I see it in your post. I think it's true as you say, that in the customs for religion the Koreans believe that they will be more calm if the grave in the mountains.

To be close to the heavens must also be a reason I think! But it must be really very hard to dig on mountains with all the rocks @slowwalker? Impressive indeed!

@slowwalker Thank you for sharing this piece of culture :)
