At Bookchon Street in Seoul.

in #culture7 years ago

Bookchon means “North Village”.
Bookchon is located in the northern part of Seoul.
Which was famous for rich village for long time.
In Choson dynasty, the officials had lived there.

Now many rich family moved to the southern part of Seoul crossing the Han River.
Seoul is divided by Han River.
But most of rich family in Southern part seemed to collect their wealth very quickly through real estate investment or stock trading, etc.
So we koreans apt to think that the southern rich doesn’t have a cultural background. Do you remember the song “Gang Nam Style” by singer psy. It was sarcastic expression to the southern rich’s life style.

Bookchon had been believed as the rich village having a cultural background. I don’t think there are the real riches anymore. But you can look around the korean traditional noble village.

Let me show you.

Bookchon at the street.

At the alley

I saw girls wearing korean traditional clothes “Han Bock”

You will like the alleys.
I promise you.

A coffee shop and ornaments.

You will like the mood of Bookchon.

I will introduce more on Bookchon.

When you have chance to visit korea, I recommend you walk around the Bookchon.

You will feel the elegance flavour of traditional village.

This is very beautiful, i really want to go there to see korea culture so good. I also want to taste coffee in Korea and I want to feel the elegance of a traditional village. Thanks for the good information :)

So in your case, there is not only a mental difference between the poor and the rich but also the physical one, the river. Thank you for sharing this:)

Now make sense Gang name style song. :)

Beautiful pictures @slowalker of a sleepy, traditional village. The streets and alleys are very clean and well-maintained.

It seems in countries or even cities and towns there is a cultural divide. This north-south divide is marked by the Han River. In our country we have an expression, "across the tracks" meaning a poorer area of town near the railroad tracks.

But the southern parts of the city in your story were poor not in riches but in culture. We have another expression taken from the French, "nouveau riche" - it refers to newly rich people who acquired wealth quickly but have no culture.

So you see, people are much the same everywhere.

BTW, your allusion to the song “Gang Nam Style” made me smile. Now I understand the meaning behind the words :)

Thank you so much for this peek into the streets of Korea. I cannot currently travel due to disability and love seeing these types of photos. I hope to visit one day. I just love the buildings. Building where I live in the US are very boring, uninspired...just cubes....bland colored cubes. ( ._.)

(Also love the dresses those ladies are wearing)

저도 예전에 북촌 한옥마을 자주 갔었는데
