There is a cartoon I really liked when I was young.

Anpanman

It is Anpanman. Anpanman is a classic hero made of red bean bread with a red nose and cheeks. I used to always wonder why does Anpanman's cheeks always red?

When I first went to Japan, there was an elementary school in front of my house. So I used to meet elementary school children almost every day during school hours. The most memorable thing was that the whole students were carrying a big bag called Randosell for school, but also I found some other interesting things too. Like Japanese children wear shorts in the middle of winter, and many of the students' cheeks were red like Anpanman.

At that time, I was wondering why Japanese children wear shorts in the middle of winter and their cheeks are red as the Anpanman. Then I started asking my Japanese friends... But I couldn't hear the correct explanation from many Japanese friends Hahaha

When I asked them they said "Why is that weird?" or asked me "Is Korea different?". In fact, I know it is really hard to explain well when your foreign friends ask you about cultural differences. I've lived this country for a lifetime and if someone ask me why? or about meaning you can get frustrated so easily.

Tatami

Me and my friends were guessing many things. And we thought maybe it's because of Tatami. A tatami is a type of mat used as a flooring material in traditional Japanese- style rooms. It has so many great things but it's super cold in winter and hot in summer. I think actually it wasn't that bad guessing hahaha.

Recently I read the book called "The power of Japanese motner" and I finally found the answer!

In Japan they recommended children to go to school barefoot. That's because children adjust their body temperature through their hands and feet, so it's better not to wrap their hands and feet. And another reason is that stimulating children's soles helps with brain development. The reason for wearing shorts in winter is same, basically young children has a lot of activity and a good metabolism so that adults do not get as cold as they think.

If I think about when I was young, I also had a lot of heat in my hands and feet, but my mother always dressed me in gloves, scarf, and socks. If I took it off secretly my mother always got angry Hahaha.

I understand it in my mind and it's probably healthy for them, but if I have my child in the future, I probably not going to be able to let my kids walking around with barefoot in the winter. I think I'm going to do the same thing as my parents did.

Japanese culture is always very interesting, isn't it?

제가 어릴때 정말 좋아하던 만화가 있습니다.

바로 호빵맨이에요^^ 호빵맨은 앙금빵으로 만들어진 정의로운 히어로인데요, 빨간 볼과 코를 가지고 있답니다. 어릴 때 항상 왜 호빵맨의 볼은 빨갈까? 궁금해 하곤 했었습니다.

제가 처음 일본에 갔을때, 제가 살던 맨션 바로 앞에는 초등학교가 있었는데요, 등하교 시간에 매일같이 아이들을 마주치곤 했었습니다. 전교생이 란도셀이라는 가방을 매고 등교를 하던것이 가장 기억에 남지만 그 외에도 신기한 점을 몇가지 발견 할 수 있었어요. 일본 아이들은 한겨울에도 반바지를 입는다던가 많은 학생들의 볼이 호빵맨처럼 빨갛던 것이였죠.

왜 일본 아이들은 한겨울에도 반바지를 입고 다니며 볼은 호빵맨 처럼 새빨간 것일까 너무너무 궁금해지기 시작했어요. 그리고는 일본인 친구들에게 물어보기 시작했습니다... 많은 일본인 친구들에게 제대로된 설명을 들을 수 없었어요^^;;

그들에게 "그러게 왜그런걸까?" 혹은 "한국은 달라?"라는 물음이 되돌아올 뿐이였죠. 사실 저도 외국친구들이 문화적 차이를 물어볼때 제대로 설명을 해주는것이 정말 어려워요. 평생 당연하다 여기고 살아왔는데 그것에 의미를 부여하고 왜? 라는 설명을 붙이려니 멘붕이 오곤 한답니다^^;;

저와 제 친구들은 여러가지 추측을 해봤고 아마도 다다미 때문이 아닐까? 하는 결론을 내렸어요. 일본은 아직도 전통방식인 다다미 형식의 집이 많은데요, 이 다다미 구조가 여름에는 덥고 겨울에는 무시무시하게 춥거든요ㅜㅜ 일본은 보일러도 없어서 히터에만 유지하여야 하는데 그마져도 그리 따뜻하지도 않고 건조해지기만 해 집에선 잘 틀지 않습니다. 사실 이 추측도 틀린 이야기는 아닌거 같아요~!

오랜시간이 지난 후 얼마 전 저는 일본 엄마의 힘이라는 책을 읽게 되었고, 마침내 그 속에서 답을 찾을 수 있었습니다.

일본에서는 아이들에게 맨발로 다닐것을 추천한다고 합니다. 그 이유는 아이들은 손과 발을 통해 체온을 조절하기 때문에 손과 발을 되도록 꽁꽁 싸매지 않는 편이 좋다고 하네요. 그리고 또 한가지 이유!! 바로 발바닥을 자극하면 뇌 발달에도 도움이 된다고 합니다. 반바지를 입는 이유도 마찬가지 인데요, 어릴때는 기본적으로 활동량이 많고 대사가 좋아서 어른들이 생각하는 것만큼 추위를 타지 않는다고 하네요.

저도 곰곰히 생각해보니, 어렸을때 손과 발에 열이 많은 편이 였는데 엄마가 항상 장갑, 목도리, 양말을 신겨줘서 엄청 불편했던 기억이 있어요. 엄마 몰래 벗어놓으면 혼나기 일쑤였죠^^;;;

과연 이 교육방법이 옳은 방법일지 아니면 한국식 방법이 맞는 방법인지는 사실 모르겠네요. 머리로는 이해가 가지만 저도 제 아이를 가져보면 한겨울에 맨발로 다니게 하진 못할거 같아요. 저희 부모님께서 그러셨듯 내복을 입히고 꽁꽁 싸매줄듯 합니다. 역시나 가깝지만 이렇게나 다른 일본의 문화는 재미있는거 같아요. 읽어주셔서 감사합니다^^
