Stone castles, totem pillars, dotted with ceramic sculptures, a mythical castle compound Yelang Valley has been built in a deep river valley in southwest China’s Guizhou Province.
The creator behind the curious structures is Song Peilun, a local artist who spent the past 21 years designing and constructing his dream castle.
Guizhou Province is home to many ethnic minorities, unique cultures, and historical architectures. The 79-year-old artist grew up hearing stories about ancient kingdoms and fantasizing about creating his own castle.
In 1997, Song discovered a vast, uncharted land in Huaxi county and started the decades-long constructing of Yelang Valley. To make sure the project is environmentally friendly, the artist utilized the natural surroundings, carving stones from the mountain and creating sculptures with ceramic jars. Local villagers supported Song’s work and volunteered to help build the castle.
Having realized his childhood dream, the artist still believes his castle is unfinished and waits for the future generation to complete.
