Philippines: A country of Culture and Tradition
There’s no doubt that the Philippines is a country filled with different cultures and traditions. During our primary and secondary studies, we were taught about the different culture of the Philippines specifically the different Filipino dances that were born in the country. But today, I will be showing you how my visit to Bohol, made me love our country even more.
When we joined the Loboc River Cruise, we stopped in the middle of the river to watch a group of Filipino performers on a small hut singing and welcoming us. They performed the Tinikling dance as well in an intense way. Watch how lively they danced.
Tinikling
Is a folk dance that started in our country in Visayas region during the Spanish colonization. Its root word is Tikling or buff-banded rail which is a name of a bird. The dance is called Tinikling because it is like imitating the way a how Tikling bird walk.
According to Source
Men wear the traditional farmer’s outfit of camisa de chino, trousers and a handkerchief tied around the neck. Women wear the balintawak dress – a traditional brightly coloured dress with knee-length skirt and butterfly sleeves.
To be able to perform this dance, 2 pieces of a long bamboo should be present. At least three persons should participate as 2 persons will opposingly hold each end of the bamboo pole tapping and beating while the other one will step-in to dance avoiding his/her feet to be touched by the bamboo. The dance may seem simple to look but if it’s your first time to try and your feet have no coordination with the beating, you’ll realize it’s hard and the dance will cause you pain.
Trying The Tinikling Dance
To my surprise, one of the performers took my hand and led me to dance. Who am I to say no? I immediately grabbed the opportunity and showed them my hidden skills. LOLS. Well yeah, it's quite difficult but the good thing is, I haven't forgotten my Dance lessons during my primary and secondary days. Somehow, I was able to manage my feet's coordination with the rhythm of the dance.
Support Our Own!
It is always nice to embrace and support our very own culture. It’s fulfilling that even up to this year, there are still people who knew and still do this dance. We Filipinos should be proud of our culture and traditions and should support it that it will not be forgotten by the next generations.
The photo and the videos are mine and were captured using my Iphone X Mobile Phone.
