We are glad to be on Steemit, and sharing from our libertarian brothers, their views onCuba..
Along with North Korea, no corner on planet Earth has less economic and political freedom than Cuba. Only 90 miles away from the continental US lies the “Caribbean Alcatraz."
In past decades, dissidence was treated with therapeutic lobotomies, because to think outside the regime’s requirements was considered a mental condition. In order to solve this issue at an early age, “schools” which were functioned similar to labor camps, were designed to remove individualist conduct and to reshape students into El Nuevo Hombre Socialista/”The New Socialist Man."
However, freedom is so engrained in human nature that it manifests spontaneously, like the free market. This has lead more than one million Cubans to flee the island in search of a better future. Many of these exiled Cubans are helping the freedom movement grow from within. Such is the case of Mises Cuba. Inspired in Austrian Economics and Philosophy, this think tank is already causing a commotion on the island.
On Christmas Day, the first free-market-oriented library was launched in Cuba, Biblioteca Libertaria Benjamin Franklin. In case you sense a pinch of statism, think again. Anything related to “the enemy” implies extra civil disobedience. Risking their scarce property, life and liberty, a group of Cubans are maintaining the library as a space to spread ideas linked to peace, freedom and prosperity.
Every two weeks conferences are held at the library and -as expected- several members and allies have already been subject to several government crackdowns and incarcerations. Needless to say, all of our members are political dissidents. Their only crime: having an unauthorized opinion. Being a dissident in Cuba means you can’t work, not legally at least, since the government issues working permits. So they don’t have access to internet at home. It’s worth mentioning that in Cuba, only 5% of the population does.
Hence, an offshore (pun intented #TaxationisTheft) team of members off the island is in charge of spreading the news they share with us as often as possible. Each Tuesday, two of our members have access to a computer and Internet at a friendly embassy. This is where they write their weekly reports.
As of next week, we will be translating their articles and reports which will be focused on their and our joint efforts to spread the philosophy of freedom across the island and sharing their experiences with fellow freedom lovers and also statists worldwide as a warning to how things are when the government takes full control of the population, mainly updates on our political prisoners and raids accompanied with threats at the library... But also, the information we will share seeks to create a fund to finance further activism, since our teammates are denied a feasible source of income on the island and the only Internet provider is the government who sells prepaid minutes. That way we won’t have to wait for them to log on only once a week and keep the page running. Thank you for your attention and support.
Please help us promote Voluntaryism, Freedom of Association and Private initiative by making this project sustainable. Welcome aboard. #TodosSomosMisesCuba Because, like Benjamin Frankin said, “Where liberty is, there is my country.”
