I won't link the app as I don't want anyone downloading it by mistake. It has been on the Chrome App Store for over a week and still has yet to be removed despite multiple reports by many people I know as well as myself.
If you do a search for Ledger, it is the only result returned. From what I hear, the plugin directs you to the official website, but it is unknown what it does behind the scenes. Almost 3,000 people have downloaded it to date.
If you are using a hardware be it a Trezor, Keep Key, Ledger Nano, or anything else, only use the manufacturer's site to install any software for it. A hardware wallet is similar to a paper wallet until you start installing malicious software.

Why do people put so much effort into scamming and lying? The same effort directed at productive endeavors will generate much more lasting financial rewards.
Cause it is far less effort than doing something awesome.
WOW, your timing could not have been better. I was just looking at doing some things on my ledger, and literally, I would have downloaded this app from the store. Thanks so much!!
thanks for the info. I must admit I do not know anymore which software I have used. I hope not this one...
@themarkymark WOW! Just wow. Scammers nowadays.....
But it's absolutely reasonable to witness more and more scams nowadays that cryptocurrency is getting mass attention.
scammers follow the money.
This clearly shows that technology is not only for good. Sometimes spamers and hackers have their way through it and make gains.
Thanks for being a whistle blower
nothing can be done about that, there will always be people who exploit things.
Yeah the allure of quick easy money will always attract people no matter how much "security" is set-up to prevent it.
I completely agree.. lets put our focus onto the positive and progressive things
Thanks!
Thanks! :)
This information is very important, and should be cautious @themarkymark
Thanks, got a Ledger Nano S for Xmas. Good to know.
I just got my Nano as well. I really like it, I just don't like the fact you can only have 4 apps installed at once. So I can use BTC, BCC, ETH, LTC but I can't have ZEC & Dash installed at same time. You can uninstall/install an app in like 10 seconds and the coins are safe with or without the app, but just annoying limitation based on low space (space should be a non-issue at the price of a Nano).
I didn't know ... I haven't setup mine but I would also easily crash that limit.
If I correctly understood the setup you need quite a few chrome apps to use it. The problem is that chrome will cancel its support for these apps in March 2018 I think. That's at least something I read on Ledger Nano Github. So they need a new native app. I'm a bit scared to put all my crypto on something that requires a "new" app :). I had the nano on my wish list because it sounds like a good choice because it already supported so many things.
There are only two apps. Bitcoin/altcoins and then Ethereum. All supported coins use one of these. The hardware wallet needs an app for each specific coin though.
As for being afraid, don’t worry about it. You can move wallets between Ledger, Trezor, and software wallet if you know the seed words.
There is no risk of losing anything if your hardware is lost/stolen or chrome apps no longer supported. I am sure they will have a solution by then. If not then software that supports 24 word seed will be able to recover your wallets.
The Dark Side strikes again... but I have to give it to them, they really work hard to innovate as well.
Do you have a recommendation for a hardware wallet and how to purchase one with something besides bitcoin?
I only have experience with the Ledger Nano S and I really like it. There is one limitation I really don't like though, each coin you want to store requires an app on the Ledger. This isn't a big deal as you can add/remove apps in like 10 seconds after unlocking the device.
The problem is you can only have four installed at once. For me, that's Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Litecoin. If I also want to use the wallet for ZCash and Dash or any of the other 15-20 coins, you need to uninstall one of the apps and install the other app.
There are only two apps on the desktop, one for Bitcoin and all the altcoins, and one for Etherum and all the ERC20 tokens.
Uninstalling an app doesn't remove the wallet, you still have your coins, you just can't have them all readily available. There is one other app that is installed that doesn't seem to count towards the limit is Fido U2F, which is really cool tech that acts as a 2nd or third factor of authentication. You can use it for example as a backup if you don't have your Google Authenticator available or your phone is lost. Unfortunately, most sites don't support backup 2nd factor, but Google does.
I like the Ledger Nano S better than I expected, but that limitation is bs as it would have been so easy to avoid with a tiny bit more memory.
I do like how you can have many wallets in your app, so for example Bitcoin Cash I have my main wallet, but I now have one for my son, they are both listed inside of the Bitcoin Cash app.
The Ledger is more secure as it supports an 8 digit pin if you want to go past 4 and hasn't been previously hacked like the Trezor (which allowed anyone to get all the bitcoins out within 15 seconds and the private keys left the device, one of the big no-noes of a hardware wallet). That issue has been fixed but makes me uncomfortable.
I do want to try a Trezor and now they have a new Trezor coming out with a touch screen.
wow
@themarkymark is this different than the one linked to on the ledgerwallet.com site? https://www.ledgerwallet.com/apps/manager
Yes, there is a fake one on Google Chrome Store that is doing who knows what, but it is the only one that shows up when you search from the Google Chrome store.
Ah I see it says "offered by dinsidorova67" where as the official one says "offered by www.ledgerwallet.com"...i wonder why the official one doesn't show up in searches?
Hi @themarkymark,
Pardon if this seemed to be off topic. Don't know where to contact you.
I had an issue with buildawhale.. I forgot to add a memo. :)
Thanks.
I responded on your discord message.
