Billions upon billions of dollars are being thrown at blockchain development right now. I don't think there's a question of "will it happen" anymore. It's happening. I don't think it will take 20 years either. Internet adoption in the US rocketed from 14% in 1995 to 72% ten years later. We just need the AOL of cryptos to emerge... and maybe we need to mail CD-ROMs to every household again.
