Last month I wrote this article https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@crrdlx/the-waxing-and-waning-moon about the ups-and-downs of the price of Bitcoin and device installs of a Bitcoin app I made. The takeaway was that they move together up and down…not really too surprising.

I took a look again, noticed the graph was leveling off, wondered why. Why now? Then noticed, for who-knows-the-reason, the proportions. Is that the Golden Ratio playing out on the device installs of my little Android app?

I crunched numbers.

Installs went from 0 up to a peak of 5288, then has slid down to 3293.

The graph below shows the numbers visually.

The proportions were what caught my eye. The golden ratio is described as…

.
Dividing a+b by a gives an irrational number of 1.61803398…
I applied the Golden Ratio formula to my app install numbers, shown below:

5288 / 3293 = 1.60583055. That's not exactly the Golden Ratio, but it's pretty close, only off by 0.01220343.

What's this mean? Probably, nothing. Those who like or follow technical analysis in finance or crypto probably know of the Fibonacci Sequence. Apparently, the Golden Ratio and the Fibonacci Sequence are quite closely related. Many technical analysts believe that ups-and-downs of finance trends follow Fibonacci patterns. Is that what's going on here with my app's installs? I doubt it, but I don't know.

I do know that there are many an instance of the Golden Ratio occurring in nature (plants, the nautilus mollusk, M/F honeybee ratio). And the Golden Ratio does appear to somehow be hardwired into us…the proportions are aesthetically pleasing. Not sure of that, draw a rectangle that is slightly off in terms of the Golden Ratio, say in proportions of 1.7 rather than 1.6. It likely won't look right. Here's a slider doo-hickey to fiddle with: https://www.mathsisfun.com/numbers/golden-ratio.html

Like the normal curve (or bell curve), the Golden Ratio emerges in real life. And they show up in patterns of human behavior (test scores, crypto-trading?). Are these things innate to us? Did we learn them? A huge conspiracy? I don't know, but it's interesting!
