In today's increasingly voracious climate and environmental impacts, “According to a United Nations report, methane gas runoff is ”80 times more harmful than CO2 runoff for 20 years after its release.”
A new peer-reviewed scientific paper entitled “An integrated landfill gas-to-energy and Bitcoin mining framework,” published in the August 29 issue of the Journal of Cleaner Production, demonstrated how Bitcoin mining could reduce methane emissions.
The aforementioned research paper “detailed how Bitcoin miners are uniquely positioned to take advantage of ‘Landfill Gas to Energy’ (LFGTE) systems that capture and convert methane gas from landfills into usable energy, sequestering the greenhouse gas and reducing its harmful effects on the atmosphere.”
Furthermore, the researchers noted that this incentive structure is not limited to methane emissions, but could also be used to recycle underutilized energy in the form of “abandoned oil and gas wells, wastewater treatment plants, farms, and agricultural processing operations.”
The recent research paper published in the Journal of Cleaner Production was not the first to touch on the topic of Bitcoin miners reducing emissions by reusing underutilized energy sources.
