I'd add that Steemit does a good job of giving you something to spend your money on, albeit something that you don't HAVE to spend your money on. Good content is valuable, and when you upvote something, you are essentially spending your purchasing power on that. Man cannot live on content alone, but it is of value, and it does give people a reason to use SP instead of selling Steem.
