The North Carolina state in the United States has barred election candidates from accepting donations in cryptocurrencies.

So, candidates in this state will not be able to receive donations in crypto to fund their campaigns.

Although, in 2014 the Federal Election Commission in USA gave permission to candidates for federal office to accept Bitcoin donations, there is a provision for the state that they can set their own rules for state election candidates.

The state authorities took this decision after a Republican candidate sought the opinion of the North Carolina State Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement on the issue.

The candidate running in the 2018 U.S midterm Legislature elections, Emmanuel Wilder, wrote to the board earlier this year if he could accept cryptocurrency or Bitcoin donations for his campaign funds.

And if he can, then how these donations would be valued, the candidate also asked.

Responding to his query, State Board of Elections Executive Director for North Carolina, Kim Westbrook Strach, said election candidates in the state will not be able to receive crypto donations to fund their election campaigns.

She explained that the monetary limits in the state campaign finance regulations are given in U.S dollars and donations paid in cryptocurrencies cannot be properly valued.

Wilder, however, was not happy with this decision and expressed his disappointment but hoped it might not be today, but there will be a day when blockchain technology will have a place in the political process.
