Steem is quite cheap I'd say at the moment at around $0.95 on Poloniex is not A bad buy but too bad you can't withdraw because Steem and Sbd deposits and Withdraws are Disabled on Poloniex
There might be a bit of turbulence with China 🇨🇳 along the way closing down a few exchanges and trying a few rubbish things to slow down the Growth of Cryptocurrencies
So you might be able to get Steem even cheaper at around $0.80 - $0.90 as it was the case a few days ago too
The new Hard Fork at the end of the year might help Steem gain on value because there will be mass registration of users as the waiting list for Registering will no longer exist
Therefore there will be more demand for Steem so the price will eventually increase
Powering up your account now might be the best option for everyone honestly
You don't want to go and buy Steem at $10
But You will for sure buy it at $10 in the future
Don't trade your Steem don't cash out

The "wait list", from what I gather after looking over posts on the topic can probably just be considered "longer than usual approval process". When I registered, I was not approved instantly. I was approved about a day later. Now it takes two weeks or maybe slightly more in some cases. Steemit is still in beta and work to further develop and improve (in the long run) is ongoing. I suspect that revisions are being made which involve user accounts in a major way. This is strictly speculation, I don't have a profoundly deep understanding. You can search articles by topic to gain more insight on them (hopefully). Search by clicking the magnify glass symbol upper right corner next to your avatar- a search field appears with google branding but it prioritizes steemit posts. "Hard Fork" results will include previous fork info as well. I think there was a recent update to the "white paper" also which may offer insight into upcoming events.
