Most will agree with me that talking to people about Steemit is not an easy tasks. I believe and conclude based on my experience, it is because of their ignorance about cryptocurrencies and how it works.
In Asia, Europe and the Americas, cryptocurrency trading has become a way of life, but that is not the case in Nigeria and other African countries, that is why it is very difficult to explain Steemit to a African/Nigerian man.
Before one can understand steemit well, one needs to have an idea about what cryptocurrency is all about. So my advice is before you tell people about steemit, to make things easier for yourself and them, first of all, tell them all about cyptocurrencies.
They should understand that
The first cryptocurrency is the Bitcoin which is a decentralized cryptocurrency and it came into existence in 2009. Other cryptocurrencies generally known as altcoins had or are still emerging daily through ICOs. It is important to note that each cryptocurrency has a purpose and aim for it existence, but they are all a blend of bitcoin alternative.
Bitcoin and its alternatives are not controlled by any government but they all serve as a digital currency which is easily accessible by all and are used for immediate settlement of transactions in exchange for goods and services. With cryptocurrencies, no more government interventions and regualtions, no more delays and all the financial institutions bureaucratic procedures. The fun part is that it they are secure, trustful and transparent digital currencies that cost little or the fees are low.
There are more than 800 cryptocurrencies available over the internet and the numbers are growing daily. According to market capitalization, Bitcoin is currently the largest, followed by Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, Ripple and Litecoin.
These coins can be traded ie bought and sold. As a Nigerian, I can buy Bitcoins on Localbitcoins.com, trade it for other Cryptos on Bittrex.com, Poloniex.com or make use of @blocktrades
To understand how steemit works, one needs to understand how cryptocurrencies work. When this is understood then it will be easier for them to understand that steem and SBD are altcoins that could be earned from steemit.com
Then question of
"how can I change steem or SBD to the local currency"
won't be a problem any longer because the will know that once you have bitcoin wallet you can convert and send your SDB or Steem earnings there, and then convert it to your local currency or other fiat currency.
Finally, you can spend it on groceries, rent, travel and any other need and wants you want to satisfy.
I read a post "why steemit will be reddit and facebook killer by @charles1
Very nice post. You can check it out. But then before steemit becomes the killer of facebook and reddit , people have to be aware of crypgocurrencies. African countries need to be educated on the importance of digital money, investments and it's benefits. When lots of people know this, then the won't be spending so much time on social networks like facebook and reddit which doesn't pay. The will spend time on steemit instead.
Thanks for the insight,, crypto is really the future,, i hope its not late for me...
It's never late
Thanks, I'm saving this
Now this is great piece of advice here.
You are right about it being hard to explain Steemit to Africans hen they even do not know or have wrong perceptions of Steemit.
We also have many people in Africa with biased minds about anything Online!
This is due to bad former experience to Ponzis and Pyramids.
I am in Uganda, but many people have lost so much money in Ponzis
.
We shall always explain Steemit to them until they see value in it.
We shall always explain Steemit to them until they see value in it.
You are on point
