Its meant to point out that its unoriginal content so that if your rewards get to high people might feel the need to flag. Steemit is not meant for people to make a ton of money of other peoples content.
Minjng is still doing well and it seems to be a bit more profitable than before but I'd rather stake than mine but that might just be me personally.

Proof of stake sounds to me, that a few rich (have a lot of coins) will be in charge of the network and produce new coins. Is that not the same as the fiat system we have today basically, that cryptocurrecy was going to help us get away from?

I tend to believe proof of stake is a step forward comparing to proof of work.
