They improved a very popular and old coin, Zcash. They abandoned the project because they are chasing the money and are greedy. It is an improved Zcash but the community will decide its fate. It is a high risk trade... and you're right that there's a good chance it could end up failing, and looking like a Bitconnect chart.
That pump was due to btcp fork. Zcl has no team at the moment. They moved to btcp after the fork.
