Irony: The Dark Web Needs Cryptocurrency

in #cryptocurrency7 years ago

I stumbled upon the AMA (Ask Me Anything) of Eileen Ormsby, author of The Darkest Web.

It's about the dark web.

What's the dark web? It's the internet evil sibling where all sorts of fucked up shit happens.

Paedophile forums.

Hurtcore forums, where people who are sexually aroused by minors getting hurt congregate.

Avenues for people to get drugs 'safely.'

And more fucked up shit.

Anyway, in her AMA, I came across this interesting fact:

So... cryptocurrency kind of facilitates all this fucked up shit.

But in that sense, it's adoption happening.

I guess there's always side effects to any kind of evolution in society huh?

Look at Silk Road, the huge ass e-commerce site in the dark web that helped people get drugs and other weird shit online. They used Bitcoin mostly.

Check out the entire AMA if you want disturbing facts and stuff to ruin your day. Don't say I didn't warn you.

For a brilliant piece of journalism on how Silk Road was taken down, check this article out by Wired.

Sort:

This article seems to generalize and have a bias against the "Dark Web".. It isn't all about drugs/abuse/illegal activities; and most of its users are mostly every day people, not people with wrong intentions. There are legitimate uses for the anonymity it provides.

Like for what?

Another cool thing.
