If you don't already have Coinbase, you probably want to get it now. Coinbase is an exchange where you can turn your Fiat USD currency into Bitcoins, Ethereum, Litecoin and other cryptocurrencies so that you could trade on the open exchanges.
It's going to take anywhere from 4 days to a week to get you verified. There's no way around that. What that means is, Coinbase wants to know that you are you. They're going to require you to send photo identification and a copy of your credit card to them so that they can verify that you're a real person. Once that takes place, usually three to four days, you can begin purchasing these base cryptocurrencies.

Once you're verified through Coinbase, then you can go to exchanges such as Binance, Bittrex or Cryptopia and make trades on a multitude of different cryptocurrencies.
