A brief analysis of the performance of Top 100 (ranking on 2017 Jan 01) cryptos through 2017

Dear friends, the year 2017 has been a very very very fruitful and bullish year for cryptos, both their marketcap and awareness among the public have been increased tremendously. It is a good time to briefly review the performance of top 100 (ranking in marketcap on 2017 Jan 01) cryptos to the end of 2017 (2017 Dec 31). This analysis provides answers to the following questions.

1. Percentage of cryptos in top 100 surviving in the top 100 list in the very bullish year 2017
2. Percentage of Altcoins in Top 100 that had a higher return than Bitcoin in 2017, invest in Altcoins or Bitcoin?
3. The top10 performer of cryptos in 2017 in terms of ROI (return of investment)

Data: the raw data of the ranking, the price for cryptos on 2017 01/01 and 2017/12/31 were extracted from CoinmarketCap historical data. The gains in USD and BTC were also calculated.

Note: the # sign in ranking column means inactive in market.

Question 1. Percentage of cryptos in top 100 20170101 surviving in the top 100 list in the very bullish year of 2017?
This answer strives to estimate the relative power of the top100 cryptos.

37 out of the previous Top 100 cryptos are remaining in the top100 this year, meaning 73% cryptos dropped out the top100 crypto. This shows clearly the fierce competition among the cryptos as well as the fast emergence of new cryptos. With regard to the survival distribution, 95% Top20, 50% Top21-40, 25%Top41-60 cryptos were remaining in the top100 list at the end of 2017. Only 10% and 5% for the Top61-80 and Top 80-100 are remaining on the list. This shows that exponential decrease in chance of survival among top100 cryptos with imaging ranking number.

Question 2. Percentage of Altcoins in Top 100 that had a higher return than Bitcoin in 2017, invest in Altcoins or Bitcoin?
Among the 100 Top100 on 2017/01/01, 63 Altcoins had higher returns than Bitcoin. Thus there is a good chance (63% in the year 2017) you could beat bitcoin if you invested in the Top100 Altcoins. However, you shall always remember the risks associated with Altcoins. Even in the bullish year 2017 in the top100 on 2017/01/01, there are 9 cryptos lost their value in USD terms, and among them, 5 were totally out of the trading market now. 36% cryptos lost their battle against bitcoins.

Question 3. The top10 performer of cryptos in 2017 in terms of ROI (return of investment)

The top winner of the year 2017 in the crypto world is NEO (note: Qora has a higher return but it has a very small market cap, thus not counted as the winner). NEO is the star crypto in 2017. If you invest 1 USD on NEO in the beginning of 2017, you gain extra 523 USD. If you invest 1 Btc on NEO, you gain extra 34 Btc through the year 2017. This clearly demonstrated the value, promise or hype on some promising cryptos. Good, valuable altcoins might be your best chance to get ahead in the crypto world.
