Don't use OneSafe Password it has locked all my passwords ! Trust Open-Source ! Never use same passwords in crypto
I'm making this tutorial after a very bad adventure with my old password management software, I was using a software called : OneSafe Password and a morning I've tried to enter my PIN and not worked, I've made a software to generate all PIN keys possible, still not opening, so all passwords are lost !
But I had a backup of my passwords stored in another software called : KeepPassXC Which is OpenSource and trusted since years in the community, for the ones who already use KeePass please note that KeePass2 and KeePassX are not anymore updated, now the new fork is KeePassXC.
1 - Your computer ( MacOS/Windows/Linux )
2 - The Original KeePassXC Software :
Windows : https://keepassxc.org/download#windows
MacOS : https://keepassxc.org/download#mac
Linux : https://keepassxc.org/download#linux
STEP 1 : Download and Install KeePassXC
STEP 2 : Create your first Database
You should open the software and click on "Create new database"
You should now enter the name for your database and choose a password for it
Remember where you placed the .kdbx database file
STEP 3 : Create your Folders and Custom Entries
You can set different folder like here :
- Banking
- Work
- Web
And on each different folder you can add entries like :
- GitHub
Each entries can be customized with icons, notes, links..
STEP 4 : Create your First Entry and Generate a Password
You can use the password generator in the software to generate a secure password for you
You can set the complexity of the password too
You have to remember this :
The file .kdbx is your database
The file .key is your Key to unlock the database
You can make multiples database with a specific key attached to it, when you open the software just open the database of your choice and decrypt with the key matching it, also you can copy/paste it in USB key or somewhere safe sa backup
Note that you have a lot of features like TOTPSecret and 2FA and YubiKey,
But I don't suggest to try it if you are new in KeePassXC, better to make a simple database and try with another one to make some tests,
Optional : Use KeePassXC in Cloud Sync (easy but less secure)
KeePassXC don't support natively any Cloud Sync, and it's good because of security, keeping a clean code and focusing on local security is better, remember always that nothing is completly safe as soon as it's online specially those days like we saw Spectre and Meltdown attacks.
If you still want to use your Database in a Cloud Sync between all your hardware and updated, you just need to use a service such as Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud etc.. and put your files :
- Database .kdbx
- Key .key
And for on each computer or smartphone you just select the files directly on the cloud folder, like this anytime you change and safe your database it will save the file and share the same on all devices at the same time
