Spotlight on Cryptocoins -- Ripple/XRP

in #crypto7 years ago

Good evening Steemians

In this series of articles I want to put a spotlight on a specific cryptocurrency and write about the details in all these aspects:

  • Aim of the currency

  • Technical details

  • Market position

  • Forecast

The cryptocurrency in focus will be chosen at random, although I am for sure following all recent news in the cryptocurrency world and am taking always one of the most interesting ones.

To begin we will put the spotlight on RIPPLE or XRP

Aim of the Currency

What is this currency about? What does it do differently than the rest ?
Where is the unique selling point and at what audience is this coin targeted.

All that questions and more will be answered in the following paragraph.

The first predecessor of Ripple started in the year 2004, invented by Ryan Fugger, and called Ripplepay back then. Ripple and the company behind have since then focused on the banking sector as a target audience, both on the marketing and the software development part. Therefore it is not really a surprise to see a lot of features that are clearly targeting at a banking audience.

The Ripple Transaction Protocol (RTXP) enables the direct and instant money transfer between two parties and it does not matter in which currency that this transfer is happening (as long as these two currencies have an exchange rate). In the background for sure, all of this transactions are relying on a blockchain as a distributed ledger where all these transactions will be stored in a unchangeable and consistent way.

But Ripple even goes beyond that, they want to improve the interbanking sector of payment transactions, making those transactions fast and very reliable and therefore speeding up the global velocity in which financial transactions can be made.

Additionally to being able to have__ money transfers in all kinds of currencies__ Ripple itself features its own currency called XRP. This currency is for instance used as a bridge currency if a Fiat currency pair has no valid exchange rate.

Many financial institutions have adopted this idea and are experimenting with Ripple for global payments. A list of these institutions can be found here

Technical Details

All these transactions are based on the blockchain of Ripple, they themselves call it one of the most advanced ones, scalable and secure. Which is for sure absolutely necessary if they want to be an option for working the intrabank payments. Apart from that Ripple features some quite uncommon designs I want to also at least mention.

  • Gateways, a gateway is an institution where money can be put into or withdrawn from. They feature the distributed ledger aka blockchain in order to put those values received or withdrawn into. Those institutions can be seen a bit like banks for the Ripple blockchain.

  • Consensus ledger, Ripple features a quite unique way of consensus mechanism, its kind of a distributed Proof of correctness. So in very short words, all nodes need to reach consensus about the state and the transactions to execute, if this fails they will start over again with a reduced disagreement until the consensus is finally reached.

  • Bitcoin bridge, not only is there the possibility to do transactions with a lot of fiat currencies but also to send funds to a bitcoin account without need to hold any digital currency.

I don't want to go further into the technical details, but it is quite obvious that Ripple does some things different to Bitcoin for instance. Further information can be found here.

Market Position

Currently, Ripple is placed 3rd in Cryptocurrency World if we sort this by Market Capitalization. (Data took from Coinmarketcap.com at 10/16/17 on 22:06 CET). It had quite a tough fight for the 3rd position with Bitcoin Cash, both of them were having a Market Cap of over 7 Billion Dollars in September. But Ripple won this fight during the last weeks and is now leading by 5 Billion Dollars, having 10 Billion while Bitcoin Cash has reduced to only have 5.

After having quite a good time following a clever marketing strategy in end of August things settled down a bit in September. But now with the big Ripple conference right around the corner things have heated up and Ripple made good progress in price again. This can be seen clearly in the 3 month chart.

If we are looking back even further than that we see the general rise in April-June (happened all over the crypto market) where one Ripple was worth 0.41 Dollars at its peak.

Forecast

The marketing strategy that I talked about in the paragraph before was a countdown and traders believed that something huge was happening at the end of it. In the end, they announced a big get together of the who is who in the banking industry like Ben Bernanke and Tim Berners-Lee. This was seen as a bit of a setback and therefore sells started again after this rather big gains.

In the end, I am quite sure that the strategy of focusing on the banking sector and building a strong network there is paying off sooner or later. As we can see on this event clearly people are having high hopes that Ripple gets a big breakthrough with major banks. And honestly, i think it is only a matter of time before this happens.

Even this convention, called "swell by Ripple", which has been starting on 10/16/2017 and lasts to the 18th of October could maybe turn the tides, I expect some major movements in price if they are revealing some breakthrough news there.
Let's see what the following days will bring, exciting times ahead for sure !

Conclusion

Ripple has a lot of potential, but also some drawbacks that I did not mention earlier. I think the potential is clear and the ways that they can leverage on this are manifold. I personally think that this coin will see a nice development in price in 2017 and the coming years.

Last but not least there are also some drawbacks and they should not be unmentioned:

  • Completely pre-mined coin with a high 20% retained by founders.

  • Crypto enthusiasts don't like Ripple because they deem it centralized.

  • The close collaboration with banks is also seen as going the wrong way by some.

Xrp dump now -- when come to 5400sat again or in some mounth ago comming to 22k sat and dump again --

Good overall review

thank you !

Ripple's believe it or not. bridge currency... I'll have to look into that. thx for the info!

Is it not also true that Ripple already has all coins mined and owned by the company which they are releasing slowly or how they see fit?

Isn't the releasing of the coins month by month making the currency drop it's price because it becomes inflational?

Yes that is very true my friend. But It also keeps the price relative stable. It has its ups and downs

specially its much important for me and i think every user here thanks

You have made a great analysis over the Ripple's currency

How do you think about the recent price drop? Where do you think could it potentially go? I was one of those guys who have invested before swell, hoping for some big news (there was a print-screen of a (fake?) amex- email circulating on reddit, saying that they will cooperate with ripple). I did sell of 1/4 at $.30 but now I'm sitting on the rest, waiting for better days :D

Hi, well we are now back to a price that is almost the same than on 10/04/2017 so not too far away. Again the investors have had high hopes for a really cool message, something big. As far as iam concerned, and i know the banking sector quite well, it is only a question of time until they will have something to talk about. The bad news is that banks move really slow normally .)
So this coin is for sure not something that will go to the moon tomorrow. On the other hand side, you never know for sure.....

Thanks for sharing your insights! I think you're right, that it's only a question of time until they will come up with something great. After all I think Ripple is interesting, because they don't want to "revolutionize" the whole system, but only partially. So the banks have a natural interest in collaborating with them. Well, I think I will hold XRP longterm and let me surprise, where it goes. Good luck to you too with XRP!

Also what is not perfect about ripple is the amount of transactions they can handle each second which is:

Ripple Consensus Ledger Can Sustain 1000 Transactions per Second
https://ripple.com/dev-blog/ripple-consensus-ledger-can-sustain-1000-transactions-per-second/

It's better than bitcoin (7 tx/second) and ethereum (20tx/second), But Visa can do 2000

For Ripple to beat one of global leaders of credit card transactions, it still has a lot to improve.

You are absolutely right. There is still a lot to improve. But i think eventually they might get there....

I have a little XRP tucked away, because they have a team of about 100 employees still lurking in the shadows working up a new plan that at any time could cause XRP to go to the moon. Thanks or the article.

FYI, Tim Berners-Lee is not involved in the banking industry as your article says; instead, he is the inventor of the world-wide web. https://www.w3.org/People/Berners-Lee/

i know :) but Ben Bernanke is and i was obviously not clear about that :) therefore this is bringing together the banking sector and the internet community. At least this was the point they wanted to make.

your posts are very interesting especially for me who is
still a beginner and I have to learn more...

nice post

wonderful . well done.

hey I am new in this field of crypto currency and I want to know many facts about bitcoin,ethereum..I am never miss a article on that,Thanks to aware me..after reading your valuable information,i am getting confident..and I must say you have very nice observation.Great post..Thanks once again..

No more bartering coins and tokens like uncivilized people of past then? finally somebody invented money for cryptocurrencies.💲

Ripple is one of the future crypto coin that we all have to pay attention to,it is pumping up gradually now. I suggest we all give it a try and lay in wait for it to rise

A couple of points:

  • In mid-May there was an explosion in the value of XRP but although the USD price is doing quite well right now relative to BTC it has been a poor investment declining to about 25% of th peak price. Yes, it is holding it's value against BTC recently which is good but not doing better than BTC.

Imgur

  • While there is a lot of talk about banks using Ripple as best I can tell it is really about them licensing the Ripple software stack, not using XRP for moving money around. AFAIK no big bank of finance company wants to depend on "public" infrastructure that is open to attacks and DOS. They can license the s/w from Ripple, launch their own "Ripple" and off they go. Such an event would be great for Ripple Inc. but not for XRP. In fact as soon as more XRP holders realize this they will figure out that Success of Ripple Inc != Success of XRP and start selling.

Disclaimer: I hold a bunch of XRP I got for free from mining on BOINC back in the day when Ripple were giving it away. It was worth almost nothing back, so little I almost managed to lose the keys to get access to them. So I have a vested interest in the success of XRP, but I'm not that hopefuly that it'll be worth much more than 5000 Satoshis again.

One important bit of fundamental analysis that was overlooked in this article is that the founder allocation of 20% of the supply is now fully distributed. That means there has been a huge amount of inflation in the available supply over the past 6 months because a large percentage of the acknowledged available supply was released from legal entanglements, into the wild.

That distribution of Uncle Jed's founder tokens happened in conjunction with the May run-up in price. It was triggered by the April run-up which coincided with:

  1. legal deadlines restricting the founder supply, and
  2. trillions of dollars in on-network (nominal valuation) trade in one pair of Ripple network tokens: FCK/YOU

I wrote a popular piece outlining the curious phenomenon:

Great post!
I believe ripple is a great coin and will continue to get greater later. However the supply says much later to me. So for that reason I’m out.
Steem On :)

Ripple = Debt

Unfortunately I cannot see how banks would evolve to use xrp. People get confused and don’t know the difference between ripple technology and xrp currency.

I liked your review. I have some Ripple tucked away for a long term hold.

specially its much important for me and i think every user here thanks

Fantastic post..Really important for me...

great info, do gridcoin next?
