LivePeer is a direct competitor to Steemit which also uses delegated Proof of Stake and which focuses specifically on streaming video. Recently someone named Dan joined the forum and asked some questions and while I cannot confirm it's Dan Larimer it is still interesting enough to blog about:

I really like the idea behind Livepeer but it seems that nefarious groups could use this technology to stream highly illegal activity. How will Livepeer address this concern?
dob23hGood question. As a protocol for live streaming, Livepeer is agnostic to the bytes of video data that go on the wire, and what they represent. This is similar to other low level protocols and data storage formats like HTTP or JPEG, in that they don't explicitly make any distinction between whether the 0's and 1's represent something nefarious. But there are a couple layers where this can be addressed.
The application layer - any service that exposes the streams can fight this the same way they fight it in centralized applications - via moderation, flagging, content detection systems, law enforcement, etc. If it's illegal to distribute a certain piece of content in a certain jurisdiction, it's still illegal, even though it's being done through a decentralized system.
Blockchain based curation layer. I think that curation is the perfect candidate for digital currency based work marketplace, since the jobs are small tasks, repeatable, and have a clear value. Imagine a service building on Livepeer, already paying token to transmit video. If it were important to them that the videos were curated, they could add a curation incentive, and the curation job could be picked up by a distributed work network (think distributed mechanical turk).
Over time you could imagine networks forming that provide filtering for DMCA violations and illegal content, and nodes could optionally pay attention to the blacklists that they put out on certain addresses or streamIDs so as not to relay this content through their gateway.

Are Steemit's days numbered? Is LivePeer a competitor? Is it really Dan Larimer or just a random Dan?
That is not me, and I am not going to work on another social media platform.
Welcome to steemit @dantheman Glad to have you aboard as a regular civilian. Please don't make this your last post. We don't always see eye to eye, but I value the conversations and consider you a friend.
And I need to stop a minute and log out of the @tradeqwik account before commenting.
I have seen this a couple of times, william! lol
That do you think about this? It is a bit raw at the moment but would love to get some critics.
I won the whale vote contest - watch out! Good things coming!
Dan, don't leave.
let's hope dan leaves but not dantheman.
I'm not surprised you reach this decision. I wouldn't do it either
It's going to remain as one of life's mysteries: How to get humans to interact and behave in a friendly social environment where it remains a win-win-win scenario. It's impossible. :)
Will you be working on a bridge between Steemit + BitShares?
Consider working with US @phibetaiota on expanding the work of Open Source.
@dana-edwards Allow me to introduce my friend Betteridge who can explain it much better than I. But Betteridge says no, also so does @dantheman :)
@dob from Livepeer here. I don't think that was @dan in the forum. We haven't met before, but we've certainly been inspired by Dan's DPOS design and implementation, and have a lot to learn from Steem and Graphene as we bring Livepeer into existence. I don't see it as a Steem competitor since it isn't a social media site. As a live video infrastructure platform, people can build all sorts of video services and applications on top, but the plan isn't to make a social site where people vote up and down on live streams.
Maybe you should contact Dan? He seems to be a free agent right now and Peerplays and other Graphene projects may be able to benefit from LivePeer technology.
Interesting.
Its not looking good for Steem. It can still turn around but get more unlikely by the day. I just wish I had my BTC back! I feel very bad for the ones who lost everything. I have not once powered down as I have given chance after chance to the developers but where's the all the upgrades? I am really starting to doubt a turn around will happen. If a competitor steps in soon, which it will eventually and with a better product Seem will not make it. They need to release upgrades ASAP before there is no value left.
