Are ugly clothes high fashion?

I thought about writing this after watching a Netflix series called Emily in Paris. Spoiler: it’s awful and most french people find it to be very offensive and hate it.
The plot is also quite overdone, the American girl running away to France. She’s running away from her stereotypical “New York” life and her friend group too. It explores her trials and tribulations of moving to a new country where she doesn’t speak the language or really understand her new job. I would say it’s suitable for lovers of Sex in The City and Gossip Girl.

Her clothing or styling in this show, I would argue is a bit much. I believe it’s part of her character to wear such ugly clothing or I’d certainly hope so. My main problem with the fashion is the amount of prints like seriously some scenes she’s wearing three different kinds of prints as well as green cowboy boots.I’m guessing it’s supposed to be avant garde but at the same time I can’t help but dislike it. There’s also so many hats, most of them rather strange choices. For example the fedora seen pictured below.

Another example I can include is the outfit which I presume is meant to be a bit more out there since it’s an outfit she’s wearing to fundraiser for a fashion designer. She’s wearing a plastic rain jacket and white ankle boots. The coat seems a bit silly with white boots, the boots will be ruined if it rains..

To answer the question I have posed, I would argue that whilst this ugly and over the top kind of fashion isn’t for everyday wear for most people. It does serve a purpose for brands so that they can showcase a wide variety of their newest clothing lines, all at once or in one outfit. It serves to get the media’s attention at fashion shows by making more and more outlandish pieces of clothing. So by having these outfits at fashion shows that no one would wear realistically it means they get more articles printed about their brand, more social media posts and increased sales of the other clothes they sell.

Would you wear any of these strange outfits?
Thank you for reading.
