The disappointment - Short story- Part 1

Dominique slammed her apartment door behind her and heard the windows rattle. She was so angry and confused she could kill someone. Tom had just broken up with her. She was completely devastated when he told her that he had been sleeping with Leah for the last two months. Leah was her best friend in the world, and now she knew exactly why she had been avoiding her these last few weeks.

Leah and Dominique met in kindergarten and became best friends. They were like twins and inseparable. They shared everything, and it was a pity that Leah thought it was okay to share boyfriends too. The mere thought of the betrayal made her angry again and she fell down on the bed and cried her heart out. It felt as if her life was over and she felt utterly betrayed and alone. She wished she could just vanish off the face of the earth.

She and Tom had been a couple for three years now, and they had even spoken about getting engaged. She trusted him with her life, and he betrayed her in a way that was unforgivable.

Dominique’s parents died when she was a mere three years old and she was an only child.  She went to live with her grandparents, and she wished that they were still alive. She didn’t want to be in the city anymore. She wanted to go back to a place where she felt safe, and the only place she could think of was the beach house. She always had a deep connection to the beach house, and her heart suddenly yearned to go back there.

Dominique fell asleep but woke up in the middle of the night with an excruciating headache. She fetched pain tablets and caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror.  She looked exhausted and her eyes were swollen from all the crying. No wonder Tom had left her. Nobody would want such a pathetic cry-baby.

She crawled back into bed but couldn’t sleep.  A million ideas were racing through her mind.  She knew she couldn’t stay here anymore. She wouldn’t be able to cope with seeing Leah every single day at work, and as much as she enjoyed her job, she had to give it up.

After a very restless night, she had completely made up her mind. Nothing was keeping her in the city anymore, and she was adamant to move back to her hometown as soon as possible.

She hadn’t been back there ever since her grandparents passed on, but they left her the house, and enough money to survive for quite a while. She was saving the money for her wedding one day but that was obviously not going to happen anytime soon.

She made coffee and opened her computer to type her resignation letter. She sent it to her boss via email. She knew it was a shitty thing to do but she couldn’t face the thought of handing the letter to him personally. There was a good chance that she would run into Leah and that would kill her.

She phoned the agency she was renting from to give them notice and told them they could keep the deposit because she was moving out this week.  She didn’t care about anything.  All she wanted to do was to get away from here as quickly as possible. She should never have left town.  She should never have had Leah talk her into moving here. Nothing good came from living here.
